When I think of my nephew’s smile I cannot help but smile myself. His smile is so powerful that I think it could melt just about any trouble I have. The smile of a loved one can open my heart on my darkest day. And yet I know that there have been times when I have purposely withheld my own smile from those who needed it because I had some judgment about them. They did something I deemed offensive and didn’t deserve my smile.
Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh said, “If in our daily life, we can smile … not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.”
Today I am a peace worker. I forgive my actions of the past and I decide to be generous with my smiles. I make a commitment to share a smile with every person I meet and see what happens. Today I start a revolution of peace with my smile.
