I love The Wizard of Oz and every time I watch it I’m struck all over again by what a perfect metaphor it is for our spiritual journey.
You can see the teachings of A Course in Miracles embedded right there in the story.
Think about Dorothy. She feels unheard. Her specialness is challenged, so she gets upset and runs away. She goes on a long, hard journey, and at the very end she discovers something stunning.
She had the power to go home all along.
That’s us. We’ve had the power all along too. We just forgot.
And look at Glinda, the Good Witch. She’s like the Holy Spirit. She speaks calmly, gently, clearly. She never grabs Dorothy and shakes her and says, “Why don’t you realize you have the power, you silly thing?”
No. She tells the truth simply and kindly, every single time.
That’s exactly how we recognize the voice of our Higher Holy Spirit Self.
Here’s where many of us get tripped up. We expect that voice to arrive a certain way, and when it doesn’t, we discount it.
I say “voice,” but for me it’s often not auditory at all.
- Sometimes it’s a feeling.
- Sometimes it’s a thought.
- Sometimes it’s an image that rises in the mind.
The Holy Spirit’s guidance doesn’t have to thunder. It’s calm. It’s gentle. It never plays games with us, and it never shames us.
So if we’ve been waiting for a booming voice from the clouds, we may have been missing the quiet, loving nudge that’s been there all along.
I love what A Course in Miracles reminds us: we’re already as holy as holy can be. We don’t have to increase our holiness to have an awakening. It’s not necessary. It’s already done.
We were never powerless. We were never far from home.
We simply forgot the way back, and the gentle voice within has been pointing us home this whole time.
We can choose, right now, to listen.
