Here’s what many spiritual students do, and I did it myself for a couple of decades.  We content ourselves with little tiny bits of spiritual information.  We hear something true and we light up. Yes. Yes, I get it. That feels so good. I love that. And for a moment we really do get it.

Then we walk away and don’t choose to live in accordance with with the very thing that lit us up.

Our mind tells us all is one. I’m one with my brothers and sisters, I’m one with them. And in the same mind we’ve decided we’d rather not be one with the people we don’t like. We’d like the full permission of the universe to keep disliking them.

They’re our salvation. We’re their redeemer, just as they’re ours.  But we’d rather they be punished, so we file the teaching away and keep the grievance.  That’s a broken spiritual practice.

This is a course in mind training.

Training. Not reading. Not agreeing. Not collecting beautiful sentences and stacking them on a shelf where they can’t inconvenience us.

To learn this course requires willingness to question every value that you hold.

Every value. Including the ones we’re certain are spiritual.

There’s a fear underneath the piecemeal approach, and it’s worth naming. Somewhere we suspect that if we really went all in, it would be hard and joyless. No good ice cream. No wine. No pleasure, no delight, nothing we love.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Those who are awake can enjoy a glass of wine, a bowl of ice cream or any other thing without guilt.  Life is so much easier.  It’s worth everything we put into moving out from under the dictates of the ego.  Living without fear is simply inconceivable to us while we’re identified with a small self.

We’ve walked down this spiritual path so many times, in this life and in others, and veered off it for one reason or another. Many of us are still shirking. Still hiding.

We don’t have to.

And that’s why I simply tell the truth about myself, and my life.  I’ve learned that reading the teachings isn’t enough. That’s the icing. It isn’t the cake.  The cake is when we truly feel free and when we can stop judging ourselves.  It might seem impossible, but it’s definitely not!  Let’s go for it!

TODAY, SATURDAY: How about some free classes with great ACIM teachers?  Living A Course in Miracles: Release the Worry, Rest in Trust is open for registration now!  Worry isn’t natural. LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: You Don’t Know What Will Make You Happy In this episode, I explore ACIM teachings on happiness, certainty, and trust. I’m just home from an A Course in Miracles gathering in Stony Point, New York, and I opened Lessons 361 to 365 and the Workbook Epilogue and found the one assumption that quietly kept my own answered prayer out of reach for years. I share the surprising truth about what we’re afraid surrender will cost us, the hidden key to certainty, and why worry never runs out of material. If your faith feels shaken, come sit with me.
