One of the most practical teachings is deceptively simple: train yourself to ask what to do in every situation you can think of.
Even what you eat for lunch.
This feels silly at first. Surely the Higher Holy Spirit Self has better things to do than guide your lunch choice. Surely you can figure out what to eat on your own.
That’s where we get it wrong.
The Holy Spirit isn’t a cosmic vending machine.
Asking for guidance isn’t about offloading decisions you’re perfectly capable of making.
It’s about recognizing that there’s a higher intelligence available to us at all times. An intelligence that knows what’s truly best for us – not just nutritionally, but vibrationally, energetically, spiritually.
Here’s my practice: I have leftovers. Takeout meals. Fresh options. I could pick any of them for lunch. Instead, I ask: “What am I to eat? What’s the highest and best for me at this time?”
Then I pause. I feel into the answer. Sometimes it’s the vegetable dish I made yesterday. Sometimes it’s something else. My mouth might want one thing. But when I tune into the energy field – what my body actually needs – the guidance is clear.
Does my mouth care? No. But my mouth is being guided by preference, not wisdom. When I follow the guidance instead, I discover something remarkable: whatever I’m guided to actually tastes better to me. It’s more helpful. More productive. More nourishing.
I’ve done the testing. I’ve done the math.
Following intuition, I win every time.
The catch? Most of us were trained by our families: “You don’t throw food away just because you don’t feel like eating it.” We learned to make decisions from lack, from fear of waste, from economic scarcity.
But that belief in lack is exactly what keeps us from receiving guidance.
Start practicing now.
- What should I wear today?
- Which route should I take?
- What should I have for breakfast?
- When should I take a break?
Ask. Feel. Notice what arises. Follow it.
The small decisions build the muscle. They train our consciousness to recognize and trust the vibration of guidance. By the time a big life decision comes, we’ll already know how to listen – and follow. Sweet!

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Trusting the One That Knows. In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore what I’ve learned about trust—not the kind where you white-knuckle your way through life hoping things turn out, but the kind where you actually let go and listen. I share a moment from Hawaii when I had to choose without understanding first, and a chipmunk encounter that revealed something I couldn’t have learned any other way. Most of us spend our lives convinced we need to figure things out first, then act. But I discovered something different. Through forgiveness practices and honest conversations about resistance, I’m uncovering why the ego’s need to know is so costly—and what becomes available when you stop insisting on proof. This episode reveals what a genuine trust in the Holy Spirit actually looks like in real life.
