When I was in the thick of my own healing, I’d quote a Bible verse to myself constantly:

“Choose ye this day whom ye will serve.”

It was my reset button.

Whenever I noticed I was spiraling, ruminating, getting agitated, reaching for some way to self-medicate, I’d stop and say:

“Okay, Jennifer. Choose ye this day. Right here, right now. Whom will you serve? God or mammon?”

Mammon is what the Bible calls earth. To me, mammon was ego. Mammon was personality. Mammon was fear.

The choice in every moment is the same: Love or fear. God or ego.

ACIM puts it like this: our mind has the means at its disposal to side with heaven or earth as it elects. Both are in us. We are always choosing.

The trouble is that many times we don’t recognize that we’re choosing.

We react. We respond to whatever the ego thought system serves up. We assume our thoughts are us. We assume our reactions are who we are.

When we don’t know we’re choosing, we keep choosing the same patterns over and over. The same worry. The same resentment. The same defensiveness. The same fearful spiral.

Awareness is the doorway.

The moment we notice the ego is running our thoughts, we can interrupt the pattern. We can ask the question. We can choose again.

I’ve come to believe that interrupting the pattern is ninety-nine percent of our healing.

Not solving the problem. Not analyzing the situation. Not figuring out who’s right. Just interrupting. Just pausing. Just remembering that we have a choice.

And then making it.

“Higher Holy Spirit Self, I’m willing to see this differently. I’m willing to choose Love here. I’m willing to be lifted up.”

That’s the work. Moment by moment. Choice by choice.

Some days we’ll catch ourselves a hundred times. Some days we’ll only catch ourselves once. Both are progress. Every time we interrupt the pattern, we weaken the old grooves and strengthen the new ones.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE:  Lisa Natoli: Joy of Being.  For so many years, I lived as if joy was something I’d feel later, once the body cooperated, once the relationships settled, once the world looked safer. Many of us have. My friend Lisa Natoli, who you may know as a teacher of A Course in Miracles, just released a beautiful new book called The Joy of Being, and we sat down this week to talk about what she discovered while she was still very sick. What if we’ve all been waiting for something we already are?
