So often people define success as something achieved on the outside. Success in the world is what most people think of. Fame, fortune, real estate, etc. In my year-long Masterful Living Program we redefine what success means to us.
Success in the world is always in the eye of the beholder. Even if you build the tallest building, someone might decide to fly a plane into it and send it crashing to the ground, making it into a monument to hurt and anger.
Even if you win the Academy Award for Best Actor like Paul Muni or Paul Scofield for spectacularly brilliant performances – people might completely forget you ever existed or that accomplishment ever happened. And would it make any difference if they did remember?
Someday it may be that no one will remember Madonna or Tom Cruise. Franklin Pierce was President of the United States of America for 4 years and I’ll bet you cannot name one thing he did that’s noteworthy.
If we define success by something outside of us then we’re missing the opportunity to experience true and lasting success.
What is success to you? What do you really value most?
Yet, to do one’s very best work, to offer it all we have, to know that we’ve stretched our personal best and found new ground – that can be thrilling and it’s more than enough to satisfy our sense of success – unless what we need is other people’s approval.
The only thing we can take with us from this human life is our awareness. Our spiritual growth goes with us. It’s the Love that we are, and the Love that we share that is our true success.
What is your personal focus in your life now?
Are you placing your attention on something that has lasting value, like being a great giver and receiver of Love?
If you don’t already feel successful, perhaps it’s because you’re trying to get recognition instead of being and sharing the Love.
What I appreciate about the power of an effective spiritual practice is that we can immediately start to feel successful. It’s the blessing of the holy instant.
With a very simple spiritual practice we can change our life from messy to miraculous. I call it proving God works in our lives.
Many of us are looking for the signs of success in the world and feel disappointed when they don’t come. If we start looking within, we can find them and the habit of disappointment can dissolve. Joy emerges. Wisdom fills our awareness.
Love is the direct path to success.
