People get hung up on this one thing, and it can be confusing.

They’re waiting for a voice.

A literal, audible voice speaking words they can hear with their ears. “Do this.” “Go there.” “Call that person.” And when no voice is heard, they assume they’re not receiving the Higher Holy Spirit Self’s guidance.

Here’s the reality: for most people, intuition doesn’t come as a voice.

I don’t usually hear guidance as a voice. Instead, I get a clear feeling. A sense. An awareness. A knowing. A thought that isn’t quite a thought – more like a thought bubble appearing in my consciousness that I can touch and download.  I don’t make it up with my personality, it comes from me, but no the personality me, the REAL me, the Higher Holy Spirit Self me.

It’s like the Higher Holy Spirit Self is live streaming guidance 24/7, and our willingness is our movement toward that stream.

We tune in. We receive the transmission. We download it into our awareness.

Sometimes the transmission comes as a feeling in our body. Sometimes it’s a visual – a picture in our mind. Sometimes it’s a clear thought. Sometimes it’s simply knowing something without any explanation for how you know it, but you know that you know it for certain.

A Course in Miracles talks about the voice of the Holy Spirit and I take that to mean the communication of the Holy Spirit. The connection. Some will perceive it as a voice, and some will perceive it as thoughts in their mind, or a feeling, or a picture.

The ego has a voice – it’s loud and demanding and it’s also very familiar because we’ve been listening to it for so long. We know what that voice sounds like.

The Holy Spirit’s communication? It’s the opposite of loud. It’s still and small.

We become acquainted with that vibration through practice. It becomes so familiar to us that we recognize it apart from everything else. It’s distinctly different from the din of ego noise. That tiny vibration is so clear that we can pick it out in a cacophony of other input.

We learn to recognize it like we’d recognize a friend’s voice in a crowded room.

Our guidance might come through a billboard. A book. A television show. A line in a conversation with someone we’re not even close to. Something that ignites clarity in our mind.

Stop waiting for a voice.

Start noticing the feeling. The sense. The knowing. The vibration of guidance in whatever form it takes for you.

That is the Holy Spirit speaking to us, and we can accept it, allow it and feel the difference it can make in our life when we trust it.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: Trusting the One That Knows. In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore what I’ve learned about trust—not the kind where you white-knuckle your way through life hoping things turn out, but the kind where you actually let go and listen. I share a moment from Hawaii when I had to choose without understanding first, and a chipmunk encounter that revealed something I couldn’t have learned any other way. Most of us spend our lives convinced we need to figure things out first, then act. But I discovered something different. Through forgiveness practices and honest conversations about resistance, I’m uncovering why the ego’s need to know is so costly—and what becomes available when you stop insisting on proof. This episode reveals what a genuine trust in the Holy Spirit actually looks like in real life.
