A Course in Miracles Lesson 258 couldn’t be clearer: “Let me remember that my goal is God.” Not after we achieve success. Not once we’re “spiritual enough.” Not after personal perfection of the personality, which is impossible. Right now.

But here’s what trips us up: We have all these senseless little goals. Get the house cleaned. Achieve that promotion. Find the perfect relationship. Fix ourselves. None of these are bad—they’re just not our real goal.

The God-Sized Fear

I’ll be honest. For years, I was terrified that having God as my goal meant giving up everything fun. No more ice cream! No more Netflix! I’d go to spiritual workshops, feel amazing, then race home to get drunk because I couldn’t handle maintaining that high vibration. And I didn’t even know it—I just thought I was bad.

What I didn’t understand was what ACIM tells us: “God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.” Not partial happiness. Not happiness with rules and restrictions. Perfect happiness.

Little Goals Hide the Big One

“God’s memory is hidden in our minds, obscured but by our pointless little goals which offer nothing and do not exist.” This line from ACIM hit me hard. All my striving, all my achieving—it was just obscuring what I really wanted.

We can have goals about the body, money, success. Nothing wrong with them. But are they false idols? Are they distracting us from our only real goal? Are we using them to stay separate?

Let me be specific. I deal with my family rental property, cleaners, renters and plumbers, plumbers, plumbers —all those mundane details. But I remember: these aren’t my goal. They’re just things I’m doing while remembering my goal.

Keeping God in Focus

In Masterful Living, we practice keeping God as our goal while handling daily life. Here’s what that looks like: When the cleaner doesn’t show up, instead of getting upset, I see it as a healing opportunity. When rental issues arise, I ask: “How is this helping me remember my goal?”

The difference?

When God is your goal, every irritation becomes a healing opportunity.

Every challenge becomes a chance to choose again. Nothing can really disturb your peace because you know what you’re really after.

Your Practice Today

Take a moment right now. Hand on heart. Breathe. What have you made more important than God? What “pointless little goals” are obscuring your true desire?

Now choose again. Let me remember that my goal is God. All that is needed is to train our minds to overlook all little senseless aims.”

That’s got to be our baseline practice. You don’t have to give up your life. Just remember what it’s for. Your goal is God, and everything else? It’s just what you’re doing while you remember your way home.

NEW ACIM PODCAST EPISODE:  In this episode, Why Punishment Never Works (And What Does) I shared one of the most transformative teachings from A Course in Miracles that changed my life: there is no sin, only mistakes that need correction, not punishment. Working with Chapter 19’s section on “The Unreality of Sin,” I explain how I used to be deeply attracted to punishment – thinking people (including myself) should be punished for their “sins” – until I discovered that punishment is actually guilt’s way of keeping sin real and protecting it. I share how the ego brings sin to fear demanding punishment, when actually every mistake is just a call for love, and how I learned to replace the word “sin” with “tactical error” to remind myself that correction and compassion heal while punishment only perpetuates suffering. This shift freed me from my own patterns of self-punishment including alcohol abuse, because when I stopped seeing others as sinners deserving punishment, my own unconscious guilt dissolved.
