One of the most insidious forms of attack we engage in daily, and most of us don’t even realize we’re doing it: constant comparison.

“Why does she get that and I don’t?” “How come they invited her but not me?” “That’s easy for him, but it’s hard for me.” “She looks good in that, but I could never wear it.” Sound familiar?

This constant comparison isn’t harmless observation – it’s a form of attack that leaves us feeling vulnerable and separate every single time. And here’s the kicker: it’s attacking both ourselves and others simultaneously.

When I compare myself to someone else and find myself lacking, I’m attacking my own magnificence. When I compare myself to someone else and find them lacking, I’m attacking theirs. Either way, I end up feeling more alone, more separate, more “not enough.”

A Course in Miracles teaches us that this constant comparison creates what Jesus calls “a profound sense of vulnerability.” And vulnerability born of comparison isn’t the healthy kind that creates connection – it’s the ego kind that creates separation and fear.

I used to be trapped in this constant cycle. Why does she have that opportunity and I don’t? Why is it easier for him? Why do they seem so happy when I’m struggling? I thought I was just being realistic about life’s unfairness, but what I was really doing was torturing myself.

The ego loves comparison because it reinforces the illusion that we’re separate beings competing for limited good. But the truth is, we’re all one. When anyone experiences love, joy, success, or peace, we all benefit because there’s no separation except in our minds.

The breakthrough came when I started celebrating others’ magnificence instead of comparing myself to it.

When I see someone living their gifts fully, expressing their creativity, experiencing abundance – instead of asking “Why not me?” I started asking “How beautiful! What does this show me about what’s possible?”

This shift from comparison to celebration is actually a shift from attack to blessing. And when we bless others, we hold our own magnificence in mind. It’s impossible to genuinely celebrate someone else’s good and feel bad about yourself at the same time.

I started practicing this everywhere. Seeing someone’s beautiful home and blessing their abundance instead of feeling jealous. Watching someone’s successful presentation and celebrating their gifts instead of feeling inadequate. Witnessing someone’s loving relationship and being grateful for love expressed anywhere instead of feeling left out.

The transformation was immediate. Every time I chose blessing over comparison, I felt more connected, more peaceful, more abundant myself. Why? Because I was remembering the truth: their good is my good.

Their joy is my joy.
Their Love is my Love.

Today, catch yourself in the comparison trap. Notice when you’re measuring yourself against others. Then ask: “How can I bless this instead of attack it? How can I celebrate this expression of magnificence instead of using it to make myself feel small?”

Your magnificence doesn’t depend on anyone else’s dimming theirs. When we appreciate everyone’s good, then we have more of our own.  When we give up the comparisons, the jealousy and attacks, we no longer feel profoundly vulnerable, we’re on our way to feeling safe and secure at all times.  We can live without fear.

The sun doesn’t compete with the stars – they all shine together in the vastness of the sky.

Shine on!. There’s room for all of us to share our magnificence.
