Memorial Day is a national day of remembrance of those who have served our country and died in the process. While I believe in peaceful methods of living and don’t support war, I definitely feel a great respect and admiration for those who have served in the military and done what they felt was best for our nation.
A number of the men in my family have been in the military, but none in my immediate family ever died in military service. I have a strong sense that in a previous incarnation I was in the military many times. I have great compassion for those who serve.
I have had friends who served in Vietnam and in World War II, in Korea and in the Gulf. For those who saw battle, it forever changed them. I’ve never had a conversation with a veteran who saw battle and wasn’t deeply affected by it.
For all those who have given their lives or their loved ones in service, let’s say a prayer and a blessing. Let’s all open ourselves to greater compassion and pray for the day when we study war no more.
One way to honor those who died in service is to learn from their experience. If there’s any place in your life where you feel you must sacrifice yourself to a cause, perhaps you can change your mind and surrender any attachment to the need to sacrifice. Instead, we can all open our minds to a higher guidance and serve Love which requires no sacrifice.
I serve Love today, with my whole heart.
