Decades ago I began the practice of setting an intention for the year ahead on New Year’s Eve and I discovered that this was incredibly helpful to me. A clear and simple intention became the trajectory for my year and it would show up again and again in my experience.
One year, I set the intention to become unbotherable – not because I wanted to be inured to what was going on around me and within me, but because I would see things correctly and live from my right mind. It became a great opportunity to develop great patience and that served me so well – it continues to be incredibly helpful to me in so many ways.
One year I set the intention to focus on being loving and that really kicked my butt. That was the year I began with A Course in Miracles. From that point on, I stuck to “being loving” as my intention for a few years and it has made all the difference in the world to me.
I found that focusing on being loving is the way to become unbotherable. When our hearts are open our attention is above the battlefield and we don’t get snagged by our unloving thoughts. It’s pretty simple to understand.
Every year as the new year approaches I am thinking about what I’ve accomplished this year in my inner journey and what I’d like to accomplish next year. Whatever we give our attention to becomes prominent in our life experience.
I’ve found that 2023 has been the most peaceful year of my life. My mind has been peaceful and even when stuff happens that could cause an upset the effects are very short lived. It’s been very noticeable, especially in contrast to the world which hasn’t been peaceful.
In 2024 I’m interested in accomplishing a number of things, but that’s not my main priority. I can accomplish things while I keep my attention on my intention and aspiration. I aspire to live from my divinity, that Higher Holy Spirit Self, the Christ Mind. And my intention is to be truly helpful – after all, it’s the reason I’m here.
I love the “truly helpful” prayer from ACIM. It’s a perfect guide for us.
So many wonder what their purpose is, but this prayer tells us, “I’m here only to be truly helpful.” That’s pretty clear and concise. I’m not here to manifest things. I’m here to BE helpful, and to represent the one who sent me, and that one that sent me is my Creator. I don’t mind calling it God. I used to have an aversion to that word, but now I find it’s perfect for me.
I’m also happy to say it this way: I’m here to represent Love Itself, for that is what I AM and that is the impetus that brought me into being. I’m here to love and serve the Light of my being which is also the Light of your being.
The next part is so supportive, “I don’t have to wonder what to say or what to do, because He Who sent me will direct me.” We’ll be led and guided, by the voice for Love. We don’t have to figure out what’s best, we only have to be available to follow where Love leads us, and it’s always leading us.
In this prayer I get to affirm my humility and declare that I am a follower of Love Itself. I get to declare my willingness to trust. I get to know that my life is valuable because, like the Blues Brothers, I’m on a mission from God.
How can I go wrong as long as I’m willing to be truly helpful and loving? I can’t.
The new year is upon us. And even though there’s been so much change and so much that seems to be a loss, we can still be more loving, patient, kind and that means expansion is possible for each and every one of us. Isn’t that wonderful?
