One of the most direct ways to relieve anxiety is to catch ourselves fantasizing about a future we’d never choose.

What if I get sick?  What if I can’t go back to work?  What if someone I love gets sick?  What if? What if?  What if?

Our mind is so powerful. We don’t wish to energize any of that fearful thinking.

One of the saddest things I’ve witnessed happened in my own family. When I was a little girl, maybe eight, my great-grandmother was living with my grandparents. She fell and broke her hip, and it was downhill from there. She never really recovered.

My grandmother lived another twenty-five or thirty years after her mother passed. And for all those years she was genuinely, persistently worried that she would fall and break her hip and that would be the end for her too.

What ultimately happened was different. She and a friend were crossing the street, and a woman driving into the sun didn’t stop, and hit them both my 82 year old grandmother and her friend.

My grandmother had been imagining some version of a terrible ending for a very long time.

Ernest Holmes called this the negative use of our imagination.

Athletes and astronauts have learned that imagining is a powerful tool, because the body doesn’t really know the difference between imagining something and experiencing it. It’s a wonderful way to train a mind for a gold medal.

It’s also a wonderful way to train a mind to be afraid all the time.

So we get vigilant about it. For me, the phrases are simple ones.

I’m not interested in that anymore. That has no power.

Then I go the other way. Right then, not later.

Lesson 322 gives us the doctrinal ground under it. I can give up but what was never real. Jesus says, “I sacrifice illusions; nothing more.”

That imagined disaster was never real. It was never ours. Giving it up costs us nothing at all.

The more we interrupt these patterns, the more they fade and dissolve. They really do. Sucking our thumb was a powerful pattern when we were children, and none of us think about it now.

We can train our minds. I’m here to testify to that.

If you’d like to interrupt the fear patterns with support around you, join me in Finding Freedom From Fear, where we practice this healing work together.

Our imagination was always going to build something. We simply get to say what.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: You Don’t Know What Will Make You Happy In this episode, I explore ACIM teachings on happiness, certainty, and trust. I’m just home from an A Course in Miracles gathering in Stony Point, New York, and I opened Lessons 361 to 365 and the Workbook Epilogue and found the one assumption that quietly kept my own answered prayer out of reach for years. I share the surprising truth about what we’re afraid surrender will cost us, the hidden key to certainty, and why worry never runs out of material. If your faith feels shaken, come sit with me.
