I’ve been giving and giving and giving and they don’t seem to appreciate me at all.
Giving to our loved ones, being of service – that can be pure delight. It can be Joy. But if we’re feeling resentful, that’s a good sign that we’re looking for specialness.
The biggest barrier to Love is specialness. It really is.
If there’s any place in your life where you’re hoping to be recognized, to be thought of as special, that’s worth looking at, and shifting because it will only bring more pain.
If there’s any place in your life that you feel unappreciated or underappreciated, what you’re looking for to fill that hole might be specialness. The appreciation we’re hoping for is really the feeling of you think I’m special.
People who feel unappreciated often find that what would make them feel appreciated is that sense of being special. It’s worth being honest about that, because the moment we see it, we have something to offer the Holy Spirit for healing.
A Course in Miracles names it clearly: “The special love relationship is an attempt to bring love into separation.”
When we’re truly coming from Love, divinely guided and sharing from the overflow of Love in our heart, there’s nothing we’d like in return. Not even appreciation. Giving the gift of Love is it’s own reward. When we have blocks to Love, we’re looking for specialness and we’re looking for appreciation.
I love that these are such obvious neon signs. They show us exactly where the blocks to Love are.
Are we only going to give when we’re getting something in return? Are we giving to get validation, recognition, appreciation? When we’re giving to get, we’re assuming we don’t already have. That’s a big block to Love.
Specialness comes up in the craziest ways, which is why it’s so helpful to look at our motivation with the Holy Spirit. Instead of being upset with ourselves when we find it, we can be grateful we found it. Every bit of specialness we notice is something we can release – it opens our mind to more Peace, Love and Joy our lives when we let it go..
Specialness in all its forms is a barrier to Love, and every one we find is one we can give away.
We don’t have to earn Love by being recognized. We don’t have to be thought of as special. We’re already made of the very Love we’ve been trying to collect from others.
We don’t need to be special. We’re already perfect Love.
