Years ago, after seeing a play in downtown Los Angeles, I came back to my car to find my window smashed.
Someone had broken in and stolen two bags from my Honda hatchback.
One bag was my earthquake preparedness kit – water, bandages, emergency supplies.
The other bag? My entire collection of spiritual tapes.
Hundreds of hours of spiritual teachings. Gone.
I stood there on that dark street, looking at the broken glass, and I started to laugh.
I actually started to laugh.
Because whoever took that bag of spiritual tapes? They definitely didn’t get what they were expecting. They were probably looking for something valuable they could sell.
Instead, they got Michael Beckwith. They got Martin Luther King, Jr. They got teachings on love and forgiveness.
Here’s what helped me see this correctly: I realized this was an opportunity to practice what I preach.
So right there on the street, I prayed: “Let us all be blessed by this experience. Let the person who took these tapes somehow be helped by them. Let this broken window become a blessing.”
And you know what? It did.
Because I learned something profound that night: Everything works together for good when we’re willing to see it that way.
Was I thrilled about the broken window? No. Did I want to pay for repairs? Not particularly. But was I going to let this derail my peace? Absolutely not.
I’ve discovered that when we’re actively giving – tithing our time, energy, love, and resources – when we’re truly in the flow of generosity, even our challenges become opportunities for blessing.
The Universe will get its due one way or another.
If we’re hoarding, holding back, refusing to circulate and share our good, then we might experience an event like I had with the broken window an unexpected expense and a loss.
Yet, if we’re already flowing with life and Love, already sharing our gifts, then even our disruptions become part of the Divine plan and a blessing sometimes in disguise.
Everything is perfect when we’re willing to see the perfection in it.
That broken window taught me more about trust than any book ever could. It showed me I could find blessings even in circumstances I didn’t choose.
