This journey of awakening isn’t easy for most of us – at the beginning, but then, as we clear our consciousness, what I call, “take out the trash,” then it does get SO much easier. I used to find life so hard at times, but now it feels more like an amazing adventure.
Now, the adventure is an inner journey of realizations that are far more interesting and exciting than anything in the world. It’s a constant sense of discovery, and often it’s a relief.
What I’ve seen in myself and in many other spiritual students is that we rise to the mountaintop of clarity and then we fall back again. We can find ourselves down in the muck and mire of finances, relationships, health, family and work issues and it can seem as though all of our hard work has evaporated into nothing. We’re back where we started – or worse.
It’s not true, but that’s how it feels sometimes.
At least, in my experience, it’s like that until it’s not anymore.
The deep sense of shame, unworthiness, unconscious guilt and more plagues us and ambushes us until our spiritual practice deepens and the root causes of all those false beliefs are plucked out, healed, resolved and dissolved.
We can have permanent healing.
It doesn’t have to take a long time. We don’t have to peel layers of an onion, crying all the way.
I’ve been having conversations with people in the last few weeks about remembering and realizing that our mind is the mind of God and we do not have to surrender to the vagaries of life’s circumstances. We’re not meant to. We’re not designed for that, and that’s why, when we feel like life is happening TO us, it feels so awful.
A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 190 says, “pain is a wrong perspective.”
The pain and anguish comes when we insist on believing a mistaken perspective. That pain is helpful to us. It reminds us to choose again, to discard the attachment we have to the beliefs that are the mistaken view.
ACIM tells us in the Manual for Teachers, Development of Trust, that “it takes great learning to understand that all things, events, encounters and circumstances are helpful.”
ALL are helpful. Yes, that takes great learning to accept, much less understand. When we call things bad, we reject the helpfulness. Then, it seems to me, that we have to recreate the lessons in order to try to accept the help encoded into them. That’s exhausting, disheartening and often demeaning in the perception of the ego.
We can fast track our healing and our learning. We really can. I see it happening with so many in our Masterful Living community.
What do the ones on the fast track have in common? A willingness to practice at the level of the mind. A willingness to be aware of our thoughts and feelings and to choose again when there’s pain.
There’s a tremendous willingness to discard our thoughts that cause the pain and to back away from needing to be right.
They have a willingness to give up the attachment to judgment, complaint, feeling hurt, defending, and criticizing. We can’t engage in those thought patterns and welcome healing. The ones on the fast track learn that and choose healing.
With this willingness to practice day by day, hour by hour and, at times, minute by minute, comes a spiritual maturity that brings stability and relief, great relief. It brings Peace.
All of this is very exciting to me. It’s the most thrilling thing in the world to me! What’s more exquisite and fulfilling than getting to find out who your True Self is? Being able to live in the upper room, above the battlefield is worth all that it takes to get there – and thank God it gets easier and not harder.
In order to discard the thoughts and beliefs that distract and deter us, we need to join with others who are interested in this path and are cultivating the humility to be able to be transparent and authentic – which doesn’t mean saying everything we think and feel.
Joining with like-minded others is surprisingly healing and it’s also fulfilling. It can also be fun!
There’s so much more for us in this life. Let’s not settle for a happy dream. That’s just the beginning!
The excitement begins when we fully realize that life isn’t happening TO us and we’re not subject to what’s happening in the world because there’s nothing outside of us, all is one. It just looks very convincingly as though it’s many. The one appearing as many.
When we’re done rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic then we can realize the ship doesn’t have to sink, and we can, in fact, rise up. What a relief! What a Joy. We can go from “all is lost” to “All is found.”
