I’ve learned that the way I prioritize things is a reflection of my intention for my life – or the lack thereof. Wherever I invest the most thought, time and energy is where my priority lies. I used to invest my precious energy in thought and activities that I actually had very little intention around. I’d get caught up in the process of doing things because it gave me a brief moment of feel-fulfillment at having accomplished something.
My intention is to reach for a deep FULfillment which is actually delayed through all that busy-ness. When I was in feel-fullment mode I could feel myself getting stressed, tired, bored, annoyed and depressed. Those are the symptoms of lack of intention it’s time to re-prioritize!
In a university commencement address several years ago, Brian Dyson, CEO of Coca Cola Enterprises, spoke of the relation of work to one’s other commitments: “Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit – and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.”
Today take one minute to list your life’s five top priorities. Ask yourself if the things you value most get the lion’s share of your attention and intention. Look at ways you can reprioritize your life in order to release the symptoms of feel-fulment in order to allow for a deep sense of FULfillment. In this way you are more likely to keep your attention on what is most important – Spirit!!!
