Many people wait for a voice. I used to think that’s how it would come, too. I don’t receive guidance as a voice very often. Occasionally I do, but more often than not it comes as a thought, a feeling, or a picture.
Each of these has a name:
- Clairaudience: hearing guidance, including the still small voice
- Clairvoyance: clear visuals and images
- Claircognizance: a clear knowing that arrives as a thought
- Clairsentience: an intuitive feeling you can sense
We all receive guidance in different ways. When I say “Hear the Voice of the Higher Holy Spirit Self,” it includes all of these. I just don’t keep listing them.
The question I hear again and again is how to tell the difference between the voice of the ego and the Voice of the Spirit. Here’s what I’ve learned. The still small voice is gentle. It’s clear. You could say it’s small, but I would say it’s gentle.
Before, when I was resisting it, the guidance felt faint to me. It felt so quiet. Now it’s clear. And so distinct. I’ve come to see that when I don’t receive the intuition, it’s because I’m not willing to.
That honest look at my own resistance changed how I receive the intuition.
Sometimes guidance is as simple as a thought about calling someone, or a feeling that says, “Drink a glass of water now.” The more I’ve practiced, the more I’ve noticed how ordinary the guidance can be.
Notice which of these shows up for you. You may find you receive guidance in more than one way, and each one is a doorway to the same Spirit.
If you’d like to dive into this with others consider joining me TOMORROW, SATURDAY in my October Deep Dive Workshop: Trust & Follow Your Intuition, where we’ll explore trusting the guidance we’re already receiving.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Putting Up With Them Isn’t Love In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore the codependent relationships that keep so many of us walking on eggshells. We give more, love harder, and keep the peace, and somehow the same dynamic comes right back. I’ve seen these bargains up close in the many relationships I’ve worked with over more than 25 years as a counselor. This conversation looks at what really keeps the pattern in place and what it would mean for the relationship to finally change.
