A few years ago, in the space of a few days, I had major gum surgery, food poisoning, and a bee sting on the top of my head while I was searching for my cat Sattva in the rain. Sattva had disappeared. I lived in Vermont then, in a neighborhood with bobcats, coyotes, and bears. I was concerned that I might never see him again.

I was out in the rain searching for my precious boy, Sattva the cat, I had my dog Bodhi with me, and she was pulling on the leash chasing rabbits, while my body system felt weak from the surgery and I was doing my best, walking through the neighboring fields around my my house, getting wetter by the minute, and trying not to imagine finding Sattva’s half-eaten dead body.

Because it was raining, I had my hair up and I had the hood of my rain coat over my head, when a bee got under my hood and caught in my hair – I was trying to free the bee when it stung me on my head.

It was a confluence of things.

Out in the rain that day, with the bee venom traveling down into my neck and shoulders, trying not to imagine finding Sattva half-eaten by a predator, I kept saying to myself:

“I’m not a victim of this world. I do not know what anything is for, and I am not a victim of this world. I’m not going to get caught in this world. I won’t. I won’t.”

And I’d have a moment of peace.

Then my mind would jump back to imagining the worst. The ego thought system does that. It prepares us for what we don’t want. It generates flashes of horrible images. It pulls us toward lack and limitation.

I’d notice it, and I’d return to Source, to Infinite Love.

I’d get still for a moment. “I do not feel that Sattva has passed. I don’t feel that he’s injured. The highest and best for all. The highest and best for all.”

Hours later, my houseguests for the week and I were standing in the kitchen, telling Machu Picchu stories. And in a moment of relaxation, my intuition spoke clear as a bell: I knew exactly where Sattva was.

I went outside, walked to the kayak that had been delivered the day before, and there he was. Stuck under it for 28 hours. Hungry, but unharmed.  I was so grateful and relieved.

Here’s what I take away: every point of distress is an opportunity to work with our mind.

To HEAL our mind. To heal ALL, because there is only ONE.

This is the work we do in our Power of Love community.

This week I sit down with my longtime friend James Twyman about his latest book – and an inheritance that traces back to 13th century women mystics most of us have never heard of. Why does the path to direct mystical experience still terrify us 700 years later? Who would we be if we let love consume the small self we’ve been protecting?
