When we hand a relationship to the Holy Spirit and ask for it to be made holy, something happens that surprises many people.
It gets strange for a while. Usually, it gets REALLY strange.
The form of the relationship might change. The feeling tone changes. The vibration of it changes. For a time, it can seem genuinely disorienting.
Jesus describes this period in A Course in Miracles as disjunctive. It really can feel a bit crazy while it’s reconfiguring.
This is the moment where many people quit. We look at the relationship in the middle of the reorganization and think, “I don’t believe the Holy Spirit has what it takes here.”
We have a new goal. We gave up the old one. Now the ground is moving under our feet, we’re unsteady and we’d like to go back. ACIM meets us right there: “This is the time for faith.”
We allwed this goal to be set for us. That was already an act of faith.
“Do not abandon faith, now that the rewards of faith are being introduced.”
I love that. Ponder it. The strangeness isn’t the failure of the process. It IS the process. Have faith. If we believed the Holy Spirit was there to accept shepherding the relationship from dysfunctional to holy, why would we stop believing that Spirit is there to achieve what it’s taken under its guidance?
Honestly, the reason we want to give up is because we don’t have faith in ourselves. In order for us to have holy relationships, here’s the part that’s vital for us to understand.
The Holy Spirit cannot fail as long as we don’t give up.
The failing is in the giving up. It’s in the lack of faith, not in the circumstance. Our job isn’t to control the reconfiguration or to manage the other person or to speed anything along. Our job is to stick to the goal we asked for.
We let the Holy Spirit do the heavy lifting.
I’ve been genuinely surprised by this. People who were once irksome to me, I now simply love. There’s a real sense of Love there, and I didn’t manufacture it. It happened because I was willing to have the relationship be made holy, and then I didn’t take it back. That’s the tricky part. We pray, and then we wait, and then we start thinking we’d better handle it ourselves after all.
