One of the most common conversations I used to have with people goes like this:
“I’m done with this relationship. I’ve had it. I can’t take it. I’m out.”
I used to feel that way quite a bit myself, about my parents, my brother, even some friends. It used to happen on a regular basis and it felt like searing pain.
“I’m done. I can’t do this anymore. It’s too painful. It’s too upsetting. It’s too intense. There’s no hope. No matter what I do it never changes.”
All of that is the ego thought system talking. It took many, many years, but I finally became willing enough to welcome a realization that shifted how I hold every relationship I have. That pain is over. And here’s a cornerstone of what I discovered and what helped me to stop wanting to RUN AWAY.
If I’m one eternally with everyone, how can a relationship EVER actually end?
The end of a relationship can only happen in the illusion. In truth, the relationship can never end, and in truth, it’s always one of love. It’s Spirit relating to itself as two people.
I don’t believe I have to end relationships anymore. Just like I don’t have to begin them either. I can put Spirit in charge and follow Spirit’s guidance.
When there’s a challenge here’s where it usually begins. Many of our relationships are built on the belief I describe this way:
“I’m lacking. I’m separate from God, so, of course I’m lacking. Joining with this other person gives me some sense of completion I don’t have on my own. As long as they love me, as long as they’re with me, I feel whole.”
That’s the special relationship. The relationshipserves as shelter from the storm of life.
You plus me equals safety. You complete me. That Jerry Maguire kind of arrangement.
When we hold that in our mind, we’re actively affirming that we’re not enough. The very nature of the relationship becomes an affirmation of lack. AND on top of that, we’re always anticipating that life is going to bring us a storm, and so we’re willing to be in an unhappy or uncomfortable relationship in order to be prepared for a storm.
Handing it to the Holy Spirit is the opposite affirmation. It’s our willingness to recognize that we’re not separate from God. There is no lack.
Lack is a delusion.
This works with anyone. A partner. A parent. A coworker. Someone in leadership we’ve never met and feel strongly about. Any relationship can be made holy, because holiness was never dependent on the other person’s cooperation.
In my Finding Freedom From Fear program, this is part of what we’re healing. Relationships can be transformed in the most miraculous ways – when we let Spirit do it. We ARE always entitled to miracles, but we do have to be open and available to have them.
No person was ever meant to be our shelter or to complete us. The storm is in the mind. We are already complete.
Our completeness comes from God not the world.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: No More Bad Days, with Maria Felipe I don’t have bad days anymore. I said it out loud to Maria Felipe and then had to sit with what I’d just claimed, because it’s true and it still sounds impossible. Challenging days, sure. I fractured my finger recently and it hurt plenty. But bad days are gone. Maria named the reason in one word, and it’s the same word that separates knowing A Course in Miracles from living it. Get ready to laugh with these two longtime friends.
