Trust is the #1 characteristic of God’s teachers and it’s also the #1 issue spiritual students have.
I see this again and again.
One of the things that’s critical for us to remember, and that helps us move through hard things much more quickly, is trust. And it isn’t a passive kind of trust. We demonstrate our trust. It’s required.
We can’t just say, Oh, I trust in the Lord, and then go right back to handling everything ourselves. We demonstrate it by Partnering UP with the Holy Spirit, again, and again, and again. We stop trying to figure it out on our own.
We can only do that with real trust.
ACIM describes what happens once we’ve tasted it:
“When this power has once been experienced, it is impossible to trust one’s own petty strength again.” (M-4.I.2:1)
In my experience, working with so many people who have been deeply suffering, I’ve seen what the hard things are for. They’re there to get us to say, Okay. I have to surrender now. I have to! There’s no other way I could see this.
That moment of surrender isn’t defeat. It’s the doorway.
In prayer, we can place our hand on our heart and give it away, right here, right now. We’re not holding on to the problem and asking for help at the same time. We’re handing it over.
It’s so challenging, and the challenge is there to get us to focus our mind. When we finally stop griping, we can give the Holy Spirit the heavy lifting of figuring out how to have a healing.
That’s what Partnering UP means to me. We’re not going at it alone anymore. We recognize that there’s no such thing as alone.
Instead of trying to go at it alone, we pause and invite in the One who already knows the way. The Higher Holy Spirit Self. Then we do it again the next time, and the time after that. That’s the demonstration.
Every time we choose it, the old habit of relying on our own petty strength loosens a little more. And the power that keeps all things safe becomes something we actually know, not just something we’ve read about.
