Here’s where many of us get tangled up. We give because we hope to receive. We give our time, attention, money, and care, and somewhere underneath we’re asking, “What is this going to get me?” Giving to get is an affirmation of lack. It says we don’t have enough and need something back.

A Course in Miracles speaks to this directly. It teaches that “‘Giving to get’ is an inescapable law of the ego, which always evaluates itself in relation to other egos.” (ACIM Text, T-4.II.6).

Giving from overflow is different. When we give from a generous heart, we’re not in need. We give because we already have. We’re being given to by Spirit, and we trust there’s more where that came from. Spirit has taught me the true joy of giving from the overflow, and that kind of giving opens the flow.

ACIM also says that “Only those who have a real and lasting sense of abundance can be truly charitable.” (ACIM Text, T-4.II.6). When we give from that place, giving costs us nothing.

ACIM invites us to remember, “Give, therefore, of your abundance, and teach your brothers theirs.” (ACIM Text, T-7.VII.7).

Here’s a question to ask yourself: how receptive am I to Love and the gifts of God?

Take a moment to look at your relationships. Who are you giving your time, attention, or care to in order to get something back? It could be a spouse, a child, a parent, a friend, or a boss. Notice where scarcity thinking has crept in. It might sound like, “If you don’t do these things for me, I won’t love you.” That kind of thinking makes us feel that love has to be earned, and that’s painful for everyone involved.

Giving to get keeps us measuring and waiting for the return, so we never feel we’ve given enough. Giving from overflow works differently. We’re sharing what we already have.

Only those who feel abundant can truly be generous. Abundance isn’t about what’s in our bank account. It’s about knowing we’re already supplied, and that our gifts come from a source that never runs dry. When we remember that, generosity stops feeling like a sacrifice.

Giving from overflow doesn’t drain us. It reminds us we were never empty to begin with.

Everything I receive I receive from God, and everything I give I give only to God.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE:  What Is Evil? In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore a word we’ve all heard a million times. It can be tempting to label people evil for what they do. What does that even mean? A stranger attacked me online over a simple question about my dog. Instead of arguing, I got curious, and that led me right back to A Course in Miracles. So how does ACIM define evil? Along the way, I look at what the teaching says about evil, and why the word is so easy to reach for. The answer may surprise you.
