Not being able to accept what’s actually happening can be a very intense experience. When I knew my mother was not going to live much longer, I had to accept it. That was what was happening, and while I didn’t wish for her to leave this world, I couldn’t stop it. I had to accept it.
We all have had experiences where we very resistant to accepting something that felt unacceptable to us.
We rejected it on principle.
There are times when we are intensely challenged because we love someone who doesn’t want to have anything to do with us. Or, perhaps they care for us, but not in “that way” and so we have to accept how they feel.
There are many experiences in life that are intensely challenging to the ego that we can find so difficult to accept.
There’s power in accepting what is.
Even so, we don’t have to like what is. We just have to accept that “it is what it is.”
When we can accept what is without ascribing value to it, without making it wrong or right, bad, or good, then we’re moving into a place of holding things in our mind without judgment, which means we can learn how to see them objectively and correctly.
This is deeply healing.
When I cannot accept something, it becomes like a splinter in my mind, agitating and irritating.
Non-acceptance is like that sore tooth that you can’t stop running your tongue over to see if it still hurts. Acceptance brings relief, but when we don’t like something, we’d rather be in the pain of constantly rejecting it than move into the Peace that acceptance can bring.
Our ego attachment to being SO RIGHT about HOW WRONG something is can actually drain off years of our life spent invested in distress, irritation, resentment, regret, guilt, blame, and shame.
That’s no way to live.
Today on my podcast, I’m going to talk about accepting the unacceptable so that we can take our power back and use our time, attention, and energy more wisely. Let’s invest in something that actually brings us benefits!
I’m so grateful for this spiritual practice of A Course in Miracles! It brings me Peace every day even in the midst of great disturbances! Victory!
