Many of us think forgiveness is something we offer to someone else. The person who hurt us seems to be the one who needs it. Over time, I’ve come to understand that all forgiveness is self-forgiveness.

Consider a common resentment: giving to someone who does not give back what we expected. We give our affection, our time, our energy. When the respect, the admiration, or the money does not follow, we feel cheated.

Underneath that, we know we were giving to get. That’s not loving. It’s control and manipulation.

The person we’re really upset with is ourselves. We’re angry that we slipped back into a pattern we know doesn’t bring love, joy, or peace. We project our own inner guilt onto someone else, and then the cycle begins again.

I call it a resentment stew. It is a bitter bowl that we keep eating, again and again.

Self-forgiveness means releasing all judgment against ourselves.

When we do, we release judgment against everyone else, too.

I used to live this way, holding grudges and expecting others to pay for what they had done. That’s why forgiveness is at the center of my classes and everything I do. I’ve seen how freeing it is to stop repeating the same painful experiences.

Here’s the practice I return to. Place your hand on your heart. Then say to yourself, I release the resentments and regrets of the past. I’m willing to know the truth, and it sets me free.

Let the forgiveness begin with you.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Alan Cohen: A Glitch in the Matrix  In this episode, I’m talking with my dear friend Alan Cohen about his latest book, A Glitch in the Matrix. Borrowing from the movie, Alan calls the matrix the collective illusion built on separation, lack, and fear. A glitch is any moment that cracks it open. He says the way out is inner, and when we stop identifying with our personality, the matrix becomes our servant instead of our master. His closing message: “Your greatest contribution to a peaceful world is to be at peace.” Pull up a chair.
