Back in the 1980’s I developed a strong interest and passion for spirituality and I jumped onto a path that began as a spiritual quest to find happiness.
Then, in the 1990’s I decided to become a minister. I was taking classes at Agape in Los Angeles, and it became clear that this was my heart’s desire. Along the way to ministerial school it was required that I become a prayer practitioner and spiritual counselor. So, I went through that training and I began counseling folks.
As the years went by of seeing clients and counseling folks, I found that I began to dramatically increase in spiritual awareness of the truth. Being a counselor and working one on one with clients was more helpful to me in understanding spiritual principle than anything I learned in Ministerial school.
What I can see now is that folks who become spiritual counselors and who actively see MANY clients, they often develop the capacity to be an excellent spiritual teacher.
And the spiritual teachers who don’t do the one on one work, don’t seem to have the same juice. This is an observation, and it’s a sense that I have after watching so many people engage in these roles.
I’ve learned so much from my clients.
They’ve helped me in so many ways in terms of my spiritual understanding of life.
You know how folks say that “hindsight is 20/20”? Well, here’s what I can see in hindsight about my decision to become a prayer practitioner and spiritual counselor. I made that choice 25 years ago. Although, in actual fact, it felt like it chose me, and I had to succumb.
My hindsight is that while I never wanted to be a counselor at the outset, I was interested in teaching and sharing from the beginning. Spirit led and directed me into the counseling – I wrote about that this past Sunday in my Daily Shot of Spiritual Espresso entitled: God Tricked me.
God is the original bait and switch operation. I thought I became a counselor to fulfill the requirement needed to enter ministerial school, but God had another idea for me. And I’m so glad and grateful!
Working one on one with clients was deeply healing to me. In learning to Love my clients and to love them unconditionally, I learned to drop all self-judgment and to love myself. That’s a miracle healing right there!
If you’re interested in becoming a spiritual teacher, consider becoming a counselor first. You’ll be surprised at how much your awareness of pure spirit is enhanced with holding space for others.
We’re blessed in so many ways, and there’s no greater blessing than to be able to support others through their difficulties and to witness them heal, and rise and shine. Then they can become spiritual teachers too! It’s wonderful the way that Spirit inspires us to answer the call!
Answering the call can be scary, but if we have courage and willingness it can be the greatest gift EVER!
When we have lots of support, that fear turns to excitement and then Joy!
