As I write this, I’m on my way to Portugal for the start of our Camino Adventure.  As I was packing and doing what seemed like a thousand little things I was feeling my fur babies, Bodhi and Sattva and a deep sense of sadness started to loom.  Honestly, I don’t feel sad very much and it really took me by surprise.

I felt SO sad and I honestly wasn’t able to tell whether or not it was my feeling, or Bodhi’s and Sattva’s.  So strange.  They saw the suitcases and so they knew I was leaving.  Sometimes we travel together, but when we do, I don’t usually take the suitcases.

It’s an interesting thing to be so empathic that you feel others so intensely.  As a spiritual counselor, I’ve learned not to interpret what I feel or make meaning of it, but to notice it.  When I feel other people’s feelings it’s so different now.  It used to be intensely challenging, but now that I much more neutral (not 100%) I can feel other people’s emotions without identifying with it.

It’s a little tricky to describe, but I’ve learned to notice other people’s feelings and feel empathic with what they’re experiencing, but without giving it meaning, it can be intense without being painful.  When we add in judgment, that’s when it becomes painful.

Example:  if I add in the judgement that these things shouldn’t be happening, or the opinion that they’re a victim and this is bad, then I’m going to get down into their pain and vibrate with it in a painful way.

If I can observe, with Love and compassion, but not identification, then I can be truly helpful, a support and a listener without magnifying the pain.

This has been a true life-changing shift for me.  It’s one of the things I discuss in my Spiritual Counseling Training Intensive.

Having a human experience, feeling our feelings, noticing what we notice, it’s a journey to really uncover the truth.

Today I got a preview of how Bodhi and Sattva might be feeling when I’m gone.  I don’t leave them very often or very long.  Once, last spring I was gone for 9 days and it felt like we apart for a LONG time even though the trip went by quickly.  This time I’ll be gone for nearly twice that amount of time.  I’m concerned, but I keep handing it over to Spirit and I’m able to rise above the battlefield..

I’m 100% sure that they’ll be well loved and cared for while I’m gone.  I have no concerns in that department at all.  It’s harder when you can’t tell them when you’ll return and when you can’t really FaceTime them or meet up with them on zoom.  They’re my mighty companions and constant companions too.  This is new territory for me.  I really didn’t travel during the pandemic and that’s when they came to live with me.

Every day is a mind training.

Always, and forever, the learning continues.  The remembering continues too.  We can rise above the battlefield and gently bring others with us.  For this, I’m grateful.  We’re rising up together.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!  The most recent episode of my podcast’s topic is Heaven Requires No Sacrifice. Every day we can choose heaven or hell, for ourselves and for everyone.  Many spiritual students resist the deeper healing of the mind because they believe it will require sacrifice, but this is an ego fantasy of doom and gloomy loneliness. In this episode, I share the teaching of ACIM regarding sacrifice so that we can see there’s no reality to the illusion of sacrifice.  We can choose heaven now.
