I heard Michael Beckwith share a story about people who accomplished extraordinary things. When asked about their achievements, they all said: “Had I known that I could accomplish what I set out to do, I would have set my sights even higher.”

Every single one of them realized that had they set their sights higher, they could have accomplished even more.  That story continues to inspire me to choose higher.

How Do We Eliminate Failure?

A Course in Miracles tells us: “All things work together for good. There are no exceptions.” When we make no exceptions, we stop labeling things as a failure.

If all things work together for our good with no exceptions, can there really be any failures?

We may not accomplish exactly what we thought we would. But sometimes Spirit has a bait and switch! When I moved to California in 1994, I intended to be successful in film and television.

But the bait and switch was that after I got my Masters in Screenwriting from USC, I felt called to enter into ministry. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I have zero complaints.

So was there a failure? Did I fail because I didn’t accomplish my original goal? I don’t feel anything remotely like a failure.  I feel profoundly successful because of my spiritual growth.

Put Spirit in Charge

Here’s another way to completely avoid failure: Put Spirit in charge. Don’t put the ego in charge.

Failure is of the ego, not of Spirit.
Spirit does not know what failure is.
In Spirit, there’s no such thing as failure – only experience.

Lesson 25 in the Course teaches: “I do not know what anything is for.”
We can’t always see what our experiences are for—until we let Spirit show us.

I’m a learner. A lifelong learner. A happy learner. As long as I’m learning, I’m successful.

In my Masterful Living Program, we learn to call our errors “tactical errors” rather than failures. We learn through contrast—and that’s successful learning.

We can do this!
