There’s a prayer in A Course in Miracles that has deeply influenced how I live. It’s on page 28 in the FIP version, Chapter 2, Section 5A.
“I am here only to be truly helpful. I am here to represent Him who sent me. I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do, because He who sent me will direct me. I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me. I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.”
I’m here only to be truly helpful.
here’s no other purpose.
And how do we be truly helpful?
We forgive. How do we forgive?
We let go of the meaning we made of things.
We’re here to represent Him who sent us. So when we’re forgiving, when we’re choosing the atonement, accepting the atonement for ourselves – then we’re representing God.
Here’s what made a difference for me:
understanding that I don’t have to figure it all out. I
don’t have to worry about what to say or what to do.
The Higher Holy Spirit Self will direct me.
That takes so much pressure off.
And later in Chapter 4, Section VIII, Jesus tells us: “God is praised whenever any mind learns to be wholly helpful. This is impossible without being wholly harmless, because the two beliefs must coexist.
The truly helpful are invulnerable because they’re not protecting their egos.
And so nothing can hurt them.
Their helpfulness is their praise of God.”
This is the most exciting opportunity life has for me – to be as helpful as I can be.
To represent God so clearly and so beautifully that people will be inspired and uplifted.
When people do attack – and they do – I see that there’s nothing about it that’s personal. They’re just doing what they do. And we’re here to help them interrupt that pattern. That’s what being truly helpful is.
