I Used to Argue to Be Right

I used to argue. About everything.

I needed to make my point.

I needed to prove I was right.

I needed the other person to see what they couldn’t see.

That arguing was exhausting. I never recognized why until I read this teaching.

A Course in Miracles tells us:

“Every response to the ego is a call to war. And war does deprive you of peace.”

Be with that a moment.

Every time I was arguing to be right, I was choosing war.

Every time I was complaining, judging, attacking – even silently in my mind – I was at war. And war deprives us of peace.

We can’t have both.

In this war we keep waging, there is no opponent. Even when it looks like everyone is against us. Even when it looks like the entire family is against us. There is no opponent because all is one.

The reinterpretation of how we see things we have to make is this: there is nothing against us. There is no one against us.

Everything is gently planned by one whose only purpose is our good.

We have to be willing to believe it in order to see it.

That willingness changed something fundamental for me. I stopped needing to be right. I stopped needing the last word. I stopped needing to defend my position. Not because I became a doormat. I just lost my taste for war.

The peace was that much better.

Here’s the practice: when we feel ourselves gearing up to argue, complain, or attack, we can pause and say:

I’d rather have peace than be right.

The Higher Holy Spirit Self will rearrange things in our mind so we can see the unity of all life. The sense of war and combat will fall away.

If we’d like to walk this path together in community, I’d love to have you join me for my FREE Living A Course in Miracles event today through Sunday three more free days of laying down our weapons and remembering we’re all on the same side.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE:  The Appointed Friend What if the very thing I love most is the thing that’s hurting me? I sat with Chapter 26, Section 6 of A Course in Miracles this week, and one sentence grabbed my interest. I share the story of my own bottoming-out moment – when something I’d poured years into didn’t go the way I hoped – and what I had to learn the hard way about attachment, illusion, and the friend I’d forgotten I already have. Why does almost everything we strive for eventually disappoint us? And what does it actually take to stop digging up the seed before it has time to grow? Listen with me on Episode 736.
