Think of how many spiritual leaders secretly carry guilt.
They stand in front of a room and teach, “do as I say, not as I do.” Ashamed of their own struggles, they hide them. Without meaning to, they teach the perpetuation of guilt and shame.
That used to bother me. I’ll be honest, it bothered me for years.
Because it bothered me, I made a decision: I won’t be like that.
I’m not going to pretend I feel peaceful when I don’t feel peaceful. I’m not going to pretend I’m more loving or more patient or more generous than I actually am.
I’m simply going to tell the truth.
What I’m most interested in is eliminating the attraction to guilt. Guilt has a powerful pull for the part of us that still believes in separation. The ego thought system loves it.
I work to dissolve that attraction in my own awareness first, so I can model something different.
Here’s the truth A Course in Miracles keeps returning to, the central theme that never changes:
“God’s Son is guiltless, and in his innocence is his salvation.”
Guiltless. Not improved. Not rehabilitated.
Guiltless from the start.
When we stop feeding the guilt, we stop teaching it.
And the people around us get to feel what it’s like to be near someone who isn’t hiding.
That’s a kind of teaching that needs no words.
Honesty like this isn’t about confessing every flaw. It’s about refusing to perform a holiness we don’t feel. It’s about letting ourselves be real, so others feel free to be real too.
Releasing guilt is tender work, and none of us has to do it alone. Our Workshops are one of the most loving places I know to begin laying it down.
