When I went into Science of Mind Practitioner training at the Agape International Spiritual Center, they told us, “You can’t come in this training unless you have a commitment to sit with clients and be a counselor.”
My response? “I will pay you money NOT to have to do that.”
The idea of sitting with people, listening to them tell me their problems? No. Thank you, but NO.
I said to my friends, “I’d like to go through this Practitioner training because I’d like to have the consciousness of a true Practitioner. I would like to live in the consciousness of the Most High all of the time.”
But actually counsel people? Nope.
The Ego’s Resistance
I didn’t wish to do any actual counseling, but I made a deal with God! I said, ‘Okay, God, if You send people to me, I won’t turn them away. I will be obedient, but please don’t send me anyone.
Before I even graduated, people started asking me, “When will you be licensed? When can I make an appointment with you?”
In my mind, I thought, “Oh, never!”
The Discovery That Brought the Shift
I kept my agreement. And what I experienced while counseling people shocked me:
I loved it. I love sitting with people. I love loving them. And it’s the Love that liberates us all.
Being a counselor wasn’t about fixing people or carrying their burdens. It was about seeing their perfection when they couldn’t see it themselves. It was about knowing the truth with them, for them, about them.
The Healing We Both Receive
Here’s what no one told me: I healed so many of my own misperceptions through sitting with clients. God healed them in my mind because of my commitment to be of service by knowing the truth.
I had willingness. I had a commitment to sit with people and to know the truth with them, for them, about them. And I couldn’t know the truth about them without knowing it about me. The truth is the same for everyone, and it wakes us up. It heals us of the misperceptions.
I had so much healing through doing counseling clients.
From Fear to Service
What started as resistance became my greatest teacher. Those people I was afraid to counsel? They showed me:
- How Spirit works in this world
- How spiritual principle operates
- How Love truly does heal everything
I’ve now counseled individuals, couples, and families for 25 years. And through working with so many people, I’ve learned how spiritual law works in this world.
The Call Within the Resistance
Looking back, I see that my resistance was actually part of my calling. I had this deep sense of calling to spiritual awakening, yet I also had this aversion to the very thing that would awaken me most—sitting with people and being Love in action.
That’s how Spirit works. Often what we resist most is exactly what will free us.
