One of the most challenging aspects of spiritual growth is learning to see perfection in everyone, especially when their behavior appears anything but perfect. Yet this is exactly what we’re called to do – not as denial of reality, but as recognition of true Reality.

When someone we love is struggling with addiction, making destructive choices, or behaving in ways that seem completely insane, our natural instinct is to focus on fixing the problem. We see the error and want to make it real enough that they’ll be motivated to change. But A Course in Miracles teaches us something radical: “When a brother behaves insanely, you can heal him only by perceiving the sanity in him.”

This doesn’t mean we pretend destructive behavior isn’t happening or that we enable harmful choices.

It means we remember that the behavior isn’t who the person really is. Their true identity – the Christ in them – remains perfect and whole, regardless of what they’re expressing in the moment.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t even see our errors because the Holy Spirit knows they’re not real.

From the highest perspective, all our mistakes are like dreams that seem very real while we’re having them, but have nothing to do with who we actually are when we wake up.

Think about someone in your life whose behavior you find challenging. Maybe they’re stuck in patterns of complaining, blame, or self-destruction. Now imagine looking at them and seeing not the behavior, but the Light that lies beneath it. Imagine seeing their wholeness, their innocence, their fundamental goodness – even while they can’t see it themselves.

This kind of vision is a gift we give not only to others, but to ourselves. When we practice seeing perfection in difficult people, we’re training our minds to see perfection everywhere – including in ourselves when we’re being less than our highest selves.

The miracle isn’t that people change when we see them truly (though they often do). The miracle is that WE change. We stop being disturbed by what isn’t real and start being nourished by what is eternally true.

Seeing only perfection doesn’t require us to be naive or unrealistic.

It requires us to look deeper than surface appearances and remember what’s permanent underneath all the temporary expressions of fear and confusion.

When we master this kind of vision, we become instruments of healing wherever we go. Our very presence reminds people of who they really are, and in that remembering, transformation becomes not only possible but inevitable.

LATEST ACIM PODCAST EPISODE: In this episode, I dive into ACIM teachings on oneness from Chapter 9, Section 6 on The Acceptance of Your Brother —and how this realization transforms the way we approach our relationships, especially helpful to us during the upcoming holiday season. I share my personal journey from difficult family gatherings to peaceful celebrations by learning this profound truth: your brothers and sisters are part of you, and rejecting them means rejecting yourself. I open up about my 25 years as a spiritual counselor and how seeing perfection in my clients taught me to see it in myself, and I guide you through the practice of extending love even when it’s hard—especially with the relatives who trigger you most. I also share my perspective that humanity is experiencing a collective “extinction burst” where all our separation thinking is surfacing intensely before we break through to collective awakening, and I invite you to join me in choosing to see the Christ in everyone as we prepare for the holidays ahead.
