I really decided many years ago to live the teachings of A Course in Miracles as best I could. And here’s the thing – there’s no day that I don’t fall off the wagon, so to speak.
I don’t expect myself to stay on the wagon and not fall off. I learn from my errors, so making mistakes isn’t a problem, it’s a way of learning. That’s crucial. No self-judgment because self-judgment is unloving and being unloving is not going to get me what I’d like which is teaching only Love.
For me, it’s not about not making mistakes, falling off the spiritual success wagon.
It’s about always getting back on, and how quickly can I get back on?
This is such a different approach than the one most of us learned. We were taught to be insanely harsh with ourselves. Our mind became a punishing mind. I know mine was.
A Course in Miracles teaches us so much about punishment versus correction. One of the laws of chaos – the laws of the ego thought system – is that everybody deserves to be punished. Including ourselves.
Here’s what made a difference for me: I stopped punishing myself and started offering correction, encouragement, and compassion instead. That one shift – just that one part of my spiritual practice – has transformed my experience.
And my spiritual practice IS how I live my life. It’s not something I do for a set period of time per day. Yes, I meditate every night before bed. I pray before bed, much the same as I shower and brush my teeth. These are my bedtime practices for cleansing and clearing and going to sleep in a state of Peace and harmony.
But the focal point of my spiritual practice is working with my mind throughout the day.
So the question isn’t “How do we never fall off?” The question is “How quickly can we get back on? And can we do it without judging ourselves for falling off in the first place?”
This is exactly what we practice in my Masterful Living Program (starts January 3) – not pretending we’re perfect, but developing the skill of returning to Love quickly, with self-compassion instead of self-punishment.
From the ACIM Manual for Teachers Epilogue:
“Forget not once this journey is begun the end is certain. Doubt along the way will come and go and go to come again. Yet is the ending sure. No one can fail to do what God appointed him to do.”
I used to have horrible dreams, hellscape nightmares. And I’m so grateful that’s gone away. What I know now is that no matter how rough it’s been, we can sleep peacefully. We can live peacefully.
From Lesson 155 “You will not fail your brothers nor your Self.”
We’re succeeding not because we never misstep, but because we’ve learned to offer ourselves the same compassion we’re learning to offer everyone else.
Healing IS happening. We’re doing it.
