I used to try to hide from God.  It sounds crazy, but it’s true.  I bet you do it too.

Oh, how I tried!  When I got intuitive guidance about something I didn’t want to hear, I’d pretend I didn’t get the message. When Spirit nudged me toward a choice that felt overwhelming, I’d put my fingers in my ears like a child going “la la la la la.” When I felt the pull to be more loving than felt comfortable, I’d make excuses about why I couldn’t do it perfectly so why try at all.

A Course in Miracles taught me something that made me laugh out loud: hiding from God is like your hand trying to hide from you. It doesn’t make any sense because we’re part of God!

Here’s what I was really doing: I was choosing to be the tragic figure that A Course in Miracles describes – the one who goes through life with eyes cast down, defending my small self against all evidence of my true magnificence.

ACIM says we seek to make “solitude in which to hide from God.” But think about how ridiculous this is! We ARE part of God. It’s like trying to hide from yourself. It’s an impossible task that only creates dysfunction.

I used to think I needed to do all kinds of purification before I could “go toward the light.” I told myself I needed to quit this habit, fix that pattern, become worthy enough to receive God’s love. But that’s just another form of hiding – hiding behind the story that we’re not ready, not good enough, not deserving yet.

The truth is simpler and more radical: the gifts of God are already ours. 

God’s gifts to us are pre-installed within us.
They just need to be activated.
We activate them with love and gratitude.
We don’t activate them by becoming perfect.
We activate them by being willing.

When I finally got tired of the energy it took to stay miserable – and it takes tremendous energy to block all the love of the universe for you – I made a different choice. Instead of trying to figure everything out myself, I started saying, “Jesus, decide for me. Holy Spirit, lead me.”

What I discovered is that the decision-making partnership with Spirit isn’t about giving up our power. It’s about recognizing that trying to use our power separately from Love is what creates our suffering.

Today, notice where you might be trying to hide from God. Where are you pretending you didn’t get the guidance? Where are you making yourself too small to receive infinite love?

Remember: you can’t actually hide from God because you ARE part of God.
