I’m still amazed that in the space of just a few years someone can go from feeling besieged by problems, up the creek without a paddle, and within a surprisingly short amount of time they can come to see their challenges as an extraordinary blessing and be at Peace.
And yes we do have to be willing to see the blessings in order to recognize them.
Michael Beckwith used to say it this way:
When you believe more in what you don’t see, than what you do see, then you will see what you don’t see, and you won’t see what you do see.
It’s so true.
I used to be so focused on what I didn’t like, what wasn’t right (in my opinion) and what wasn’t fair, that it was all I could see. There was a perfection and a blessing available just beyond my limited view.
The perfection in my life was just like the sun behind the clouds. It was there, but obscured by the clouds in my mind.
I’ve witnessed myself go from feeling like a victim, crying, “it’s not fair!” to realizing that my mind is the mind of God and that it’s not even possible for me to be a victim no matter how much it might look like it from my deluded perspective.
In the A Course in Miracles Manual for Teachers, in the Development of Trust section in Chapter 4, Jesus tells us, "It takes great learning to understand that all things, events, encounters and circumstances are helpful."
I can see that this is true. It also takes great willingness.
When I take off the filter of victim from my view, then it’s easy to see how everything is helpful. However, we do have to be willing to see that our life is not about what we think it’s about.
If we think our life is about our goals for our career, finances, retirement, family, body, health, and accomplishments in the world then we couldn’t be more misguided.
If that were true it would be akin to saying, “my life is about making castles in the sand - the most wonderful castles in the sand that I can possibly make before the tide comes in and washes it all away without a trace.”
The inspired preacher and teacher, Eric Butterworth wrote a book called “Life Is For Living.” I couldn’t agree more, and I’d also say, Life is for loving. Or, loving IS Life.
When we start to wish it was different, or think life’s not fair, or feel like a victim in way at all the real problem is the filter or lens through which we’re viewing the moment.
As I’ve said so many times, I find it extremely helpful to recognize that if I don’t like things as they are or if I wish it were different, then it’s time for me to engage mentally and hold the vision of what I’d like.
Jesus teaches us this in ACIM. He tells us to think about what kind of day we’d like to have. In this way, he’s reminding us that WE are the dreamer of the dream. Life is not happening to us. That’s a false view. To get out of that hellish perspective as quickly as possible we take responsibility for how we’re interpreting things that has brought us to this place difficulty.
Once we’ve taken responsibility for the meaning we’ve made of things, the way we’re looking at them and the feelings that we’re choosing then our mind is free to look for the highest and best choices and rise up above the battlefield.
When we think life isn’t fair and that we’re victims then we feel depressed and upset. Let’s not allow ourselves to go there anymore. We can choose heaven instead!
It may sound simple. It may sound impossible. It may sound ridiculous, Until you’ve tried this as a spiritual practice, you may not understand how much mental, physical and emotional relief it can bring.
I’ve seen it again and again and again in my Masterful Living and Finding Freedom programs: folks work with these practices and they find Peace in their mind, their emotions and their body.
Permanent healing is at the level of the mind. We can choose it or not. And that’s completely fair.
I say, “let’s prove God works in our lives!”
When we prove that changing our mind heals our body, then we know. Once we know that, we can’t choose victimhood again in the same way. The door has been opened and now we know we’re free.
