I’ve talked with many people in the last few months who are upset with the political situation now and the executive orders coming out of the White House. Many are asking me what to do with their upset, and I’ve been continuing to respond with the #1 thing for us all to do is to change our mind about the world. That’s the thing that really heals.
Many are being tested to give up their judgments, but they are having a hard time. I get it. Many are feeling helpless and afraid and not knowing what to do.
For years I studied the teachings of Gandhi and the nonviolent movement to let India rule itself and get the British out. I’ve studied the nonviolent civil rights movement in the United States to end segregation and I participated as a child.
Nonviolent Action has transformed more nations that we realise. It’s the same tool that Jesus taught. In fact, many don’t realise that Gandhi was profoundly inspired by Jesus and particularly the Sermon on the Mount.
I was fortunate to have as my teacher Rev. Dr. James Lawson who was also a mentor to Dr. King and many others in the nonviolent movement in the United States. And that’s why I’m supporting the National Strike Day on February 17th.
The basic idea is this: As a form of nonviolent protest – to take action for one day – don’t buy anything and don’t go to work, if at all possible. You can always purchase what you need today or on Saturday if you plan ahead.
It’s not a day off – it’s a day of working to bring benefit by being of service and speaking up. It’s an opportunity to participate in democracy in action. It’s an opportunity to pray and meditate for Peace and especially for our new President. I pray that he learns the power of loving action.
Instead of working as you might normally do, call your senators and representatives and take action. Get creative with it. If you know you’ll be going to marches and protests, stay home and make some signs – invite some friends to come over and get creative with you – put a sign in the yard or in the window.
I remember the story of when I was a little girl, my parents put a sign in the window of their home that said, “Save the world from Richard Nixon.”
The neighbors put a sign in the window that said, “Save the world from people like the people next door.”
That’s democracy in action. That’s nonviolent protest.
I feel one of the most important things for us is to remember what it says in A Course in Miracles – that how we got into this whole mess in the first place is that we entertained the “tiny mad idea” of being separate from each other and we “forgot to laugh.” It’s important for us to laugh now. And that’s why I really appreciate the late night comedians who help us to laugh at what’s happening – it helps keep me inspired to take loving, nonviolent action from the heart.
