For the last few days, in celebration of my birthday and the Thanksgiving holiday, I’ve mostly been off of Facebook and email and things like that. I’ve been on retreat with two of my BFF’s and have just been enjoying disconnecting from the electronics. Playing cards and board games, cooking, walking on the beach and really restoring.
Taking time to withdraw from the world strengthens and renews me. When I allow for regular retreat I have more to give for I have been replenished.
Henry David Thoreau, who so inspired Gandhi, wrote “Sometimes, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a reverie, amidst the pines and hickories and sumacs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveler’s wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the pass of time. I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been. They were not time subtracted from my life, but so much over and above my usual allowance. I realized what the Orientals meant by contemplation and the forsaking of work. To some extent, and at rare intervals, even I am a yogi.”
One of my most favorite things in the whole world is to simply sit and be contemplative. Being able to retreat into nature is the best. Even if it’s only for a few minutes – it’s always restorative. Today, I enjoy the beauty of nature and give myself the gift of some solitude in Spirit!
