At its core, ego identification is a sense of lack. Lack, lack, lack, lack.
The belief in separation ignites and attracts millions of thoughts of lack and limitation. Millions of them, running all day long, mostly beneath our awareness.
Here’s an assignment I love to give people.
Get a little notebook. One of those tiny pads you’d see a reporter carrying in a shirt pocket. Some of us make lists in our phones, and that works too. Then carry it with you and write down the thoughts of lack you notice in your own awareness.
That’s all. Just notice them and write them down.
Don’t shirk on this – be willing to take the time to do it to get the results. This has been such a cure for my own sense of worry, fear and doubt.
One of the great challenges we have is that we aren’t fully aware of the choices we’re making.
We choose lack, attack, limitation and separation without ever consciously recognizing that we’re doing it. It’s habitual. And then we project it onto the world.
Writing it down brings it to the front of our awareness, where it can actually be healed.
We can’t hand over what we’ve never looked at.
Jesus tells us in Lesson 41:
“Deep within you is everything that is perfect, ready to radiate through you and out into the world. It will cure all sorrow and pain and fear and loss because it will heal the mind that thought these things were real, and suffered out of its allegiance to them.”
Look at that last phrase: “… suffered out of its allegiance to them.”
We’ve been loyal to thoughts of lack. Loyal to them for years, without ever signing up for it.
No one handed us a form to sign. The loyalty was simply inherited, practiced, and then forgotten about, until it started running the whole day on its own.
So let’s withdraw our allegiance. Not by fighting the thoughts, and not by scolding ourselves for having them. By seeing thoughts clearly, one written line at a time, and choosing differently.
Let’s be conscious of the thoughts we’re choosing to think.
Awareness is curative.
If you’d like some company while you look at what’s been running in the background, join us in Finding Freedom From Fear, where we do this looking together.
Deep within us is everything that’s perfect. It’s ready right now. All it’s waiting on is our willingness to stop investing in what was never true.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Time Doesn’t Heal – Trust Does. In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore the ACIM line a friend brings up in every conversation. Have you forgiven and prayed, and still feel the hurt hanging on? After a Labor Day retreat, I turn to Chapter 26, Section VIII and uncover what ACIM calls our one remaining problem. I share the surprising flaw in a comfort most of us lean on, the fear hiding beneath it, and what a dog and a slice of chocolate cake taught me. The answer may surprise you.
