Here’s a source of anxiety many of us have never considered.
We’re trusting our own judgments and our own opinions. And deep down we know how unreliable they are. Holding a position we don’t fully believe in is exhausting, and that exhaustion has a name. It’s anxiety.
Jesus asks us a question in Lesson 135 that I find myself returning to again and again. He asks what we could not accept, if we only knew that everything that happens, every event, past, present and still to come, is “gently planned by One Whose only purpose is your good.”
Everything is for our good, and there are no exceptions.
That One who planned everything is our true Self, our Higher Holy Spirit Self.
That’s our true nature and our true identity.
So why would we place our trust in our personality’s ability to figure things out instead?
Here’s where the practice becomes both ordinary and real.
You’re standing in line at the bank. You’ve been there twenty minutes and it looks like ten more. You really need to get to the next thing, and it’s going to be a problem if you don’t. The person at the teller is being argumentative and holding up the line. Everyone around you is getting frustrated.
And you can be poised. In total equanimity. Peace. Harmonious. Blessing everyone.
No sighing. No huffing and puffing. No reaching for your phone to distract you. Just breathing.
Because “I am not the victim of the world I see.” God goes with me wherever I go. Everything has been gently planned by One Whose only purpose is my good, including this delay at the bank.
Then we harvest the rewards.
The reward of patience is patience.
There’s no way to peace. Peace is the way.
Those thoughts are wonderful to hold in our mind. First, though, we have to have the aspiration, the intention, the goal to go to these places in our mind at all. Many of us are thinking, I can’t do it, this is too much. Nothing changes while that’s what we’re thinking.
If you’d like to practice this with people who are doing the same work, join us at the Finding Freedom From Fear, where we practice the principles and apply the ACIM lessons in community.
The plan was gentle all along. We’re the ones who’ve been bracing.
