Let me tell you about the most rigorous work I’ve ever done – and why it’s absolutely essential if you want to stop playing small as a healer.
Everyone talks about forgiveness, but most people have no idea what true forgiveness actually is. They think it means being nice to people who hurt them, or pretending the past didn’t happen, or somehow condoning harmful behavior. But that’s not forgiveness – that’s spiritual bypassing. It’s fake forgiveness.
True forgiveness is something much more radical: it’s letting go of the meaning we made of things. It’s honestly, really and truly releasing our interpretations, our judgments, our stories about what occurred.
“Forgiveness is the key to happiness.” A Course in Miracles, Workbook Lesson 122
Here’s what I discovered: the events of the past don’t hurt us. The meanings we’ve attached to those events are what create our pain and suffering. When someone betrays us, it’s not the betrayal itself that keeps us stuck – it’s the story we tell ourselves about what that betrayal means about us, about them, about life, about love.
For years, I held onto a massive collection of grievances. I had interpretations about every hurt, every disappointment, every moment when life didn’t meet my expectations. And I defended these interpretations like precious treasures, not realizing they were actually my prison.
The meaning I make of things becomes a false idol that I’m putting on the altar of my heart and it blocks out Love. It’s a wedge between me and the truth, which is a wedge between me and God.
I don’t need those blocks to Love anymore.
“What could you want forgiveness cannot give? Do you want peace? Forgiveness offers it. Do you want happiness, a quiet mind, a certainty of purpose, and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world? Do you want care and safety, and the warmth of sure protection always? Do you want a quietness that cannot be disturbed, a gentleness that never can be hurt, a deep abiding comfort, and a rest so perfect it can never be upset?” (ACIM Workbook, Lesson 122)
The work of forgiveness is rigorous because it requires us to look at what we’ve been avoiding. Unforgiveness is like having an infected wound – when we don’t want to look at it or deal with it, so it just gets worse and worse until it begins to suck the life out of us. But when we finally have the courage to examine the wound, clean it out, and let it heal, the relief is extraordinary.
I used to think spiritual practice meant spending hours in prayer and meditation. But I learned that true spiritual work is moment-by-moment mindfulness – the willingness to catch myself in judgment and choose love instead. It’s the discipline of releasing attack thoughts the moment they arise.
This is what A Course in Miracles calls being consistent – not having any thought that contradicts another, not saying one thing while thinking something else. It’s the end of internal conflict, and it’s the beginning of real power as a healer.
When we’re no longer at war with ourselves, we can be truly helpful to others.
When we’ve done our own forgiveness work, we can hold space for others to do theirs. When we’ve released our own interpretations about the past, we can help others see beyond their stories to the truth of who they are.
This work isn’t easy, but it’s the most liberating thing you’ll ever do. And it’s not optional if you want to be an effective healer in your family, or your workplace.

LATEST ACIM PODCAST EPISODE: In this episode, How to Become the Spiritual Leader of Your Family I dive deep into Chapter 7 of A Course in Miracles, exploring how the extension of God’s love is our only function—we literally cannot contain the fullness of God, so we naturally share it! I share my personal journey from believing I was “fundamentally bad” and unworthy of joy, to discovering that judgment creates a split mind that blocks our joy and our function. The most beautiful revelation? I healed my entire family dynamic without talking about spirituality—no more awful arguments, just Peace—simply by doing my inner work. As we finish this nine-year numerology cycle, I’m inviting you to recognize that your willingness is all that’s required; your personality doesn’t have what it takes (and never could), but Spirit does, and Spirit only needs your willingness to extend love to everyone, everywhere, answering every cry for love including your own.
