There is a sentence in A Course in Miracles that dissolves the entire framework of victimhood — if we’re willing to let it in. A Course in Miracles tells us: “There is nothing outside you. This is what you must ultimately learn. For it is the realization that the kingdom of heaven is restored to you.” Chapter 18, Section 6, right before “I Need Do Nothing.” One sentence — and if we allow it to land, everything shifts.
The Belief That Keeps Us Trapped
We spend so much of our lives believing that everything we’re looking for is out there — love out there, happiness out there, approval out there, peace out there. As long as we believe that, we remain dependent: on other people, on circumstances, on things shifting in ways we can’t control. But the teaching is clear. There is nothing outside us.
God is not outside us, our brothers and sisters are not outside us, and our thoughts about everything are within us, generating our experience.
That means we can go the other way. We can have a healing.
The End of Waiting
We don’t have to wait for someone else to change, or for an apology that may never come, or for circumstances to align. A Course in Miracles also tells us: “Heaven is not a place nor a condition. It is merely an awareness of perfect oneness and the knowledge that there is nothing else.” The kingdom of heaven is within us. It’s been there all along.
We Set Ourselves Free
My grandmother used to say, “You can get used to hanging if you hang long enough.” She was a southern belle from Mississippi, and she had a way of naming the thing exactly. It’s true — we’ve gotten used to hanging on the cross of crucifixion, carrying betrayal and grievances and old stories of being wronged. But we are the ones who set ourselves free. Not someday, not when the right circumstances arrive — now, if we’re willing.
