I didn’t realize it, but for so long I believed that heaven, happiness, Peace, all that I wanted would be in the future. It was always not where I was, but somewhere yet to come. When I finally realized I was the one who believed that, thought that, and was making it my reality, I decided to train my mind, with ACIM help, to realize the truth – I am already as holy as holy can be. I can’t get more holy.
And, I began to see that God’s infinite Peace was already mine too.
The peace of God is here, where we are.
Right here. Inside each of us, right this moment.
I was sitting with Lesson 188 of A Course in Miracles, “The Peace of God is Shining in Me Now,” and this line lit up for me:
“Why wait for heaven? Those who seek the light are merely covering their eyes.”
Take that in.
We spend so much of our lives waiting.
Waiting for the relationship to change.
Waiting for the circumstances to improve.
Waiting for the holidays to finish.
Waiting for the people around us to finally be who we think they should be.
All the while, heaven is here.
ACIM is telling us something we’ve been missing: the peace we’re seeking is already within us. Not coming later. Not when conditions improve. Not when we finally figure everything out.
Right now.
The kingdom is within. The treasure is within our heart. That’s where it is.
Here’s what’s helpful to understand: peace is an eternal quality of God. It’s omnipresent and it’s omnipotent. Peace isn’t something that comes and goes. Like Love, it’s the very ground of our being.
How could we possibly fall in and out of it?
If Love is our true nature, if peace is our true essence, then the seeking outside can end.
The endless search through more books, more teachers, more retreats, more relationships can finally rest.
Nothing needs to be added. Everything is added when we recognize it’s already here.
So what are we doing when we seek the peace somewhere else?
We’re covering our eyes. We’re looking outside ourselves for what’s already shining inside. We’re convinced the answer is in the next thing, the next place, the next person. And all the while, the peace of God is shining in us now.
Spirit is now. The healing is now.
If we’re tired of searching, tired of waiting, tired of chasing peace somewhere “out there,” this is the invitation. We can turn within. We can uncover our eyes. We can let the light that’s always been shining actually be seen.
