Think about the closets in your home. Many of us are holding onto old clothes that no longer fit, books we will never open again, and stacks of newspapers we promised ourselves we would read.

We keep these things because we fear we might need them someday. Hoarding is an active belief in lack and limitation. Out of fear, we hold on to what we don’t need, convinced we will be poorer without it.

Something similar happens with our emotions. People hoard resentments, regrets, and grudges. They stockpile hurts as though, without them, they would be powerless. That was me.

I know this because I lived it. I held on to resentment tightly, and I didn’t let it go because I didn’t believe it had value. I believed those resentments would make me strong, keep me from being weak, and keep other people from taking advantage of me.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Here’s what made a difference for me: the clearing. I took bags and bags of books,14 shopping bags, to the library. I donated boxes of clothes and magazines. Once the clutter was gone, my home felt like a breath of fresh air, and I could feel the energy shift.

The same thing happens when we clear out emotional clutter.

When we let go of resentment and choose forgiveness, we’re saying, “I don’t value being stuck in the past anymore.”

Holding on to resentment takes a lot of energy. Every grudge we nurse draws something from us and keeps us tied to a past we’re ready to leave behind.

Look at what you are still holding today. Ask yourself which resentments you’ve been stockpiling, and what it would feel like to set one down. You don’t have to clear everything at once. You only need to be willing to begin.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: Putting Up With Them Isn’t Love In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore the codependent relationships that keep so many of us walking on eggshells. We give more, love harder, and keep the peace, and somehow the same dynamic comes right back. I’ve seen these bargains up close in the many relationships I’ve worked with over more than 25 years as a counselor. This conversation looks at what really keeps the pattern in place and what it would mean for the relationship to finally change.
