I hold a master’s degree in screenwriting, and I’ve been a playwright. I’ve always loved storytelling, and I’ve come to see the Higher Holy Spirit Self speaking through stories. Movies, dramas, poetry, and theater all reflect the same truth: we’re invited again and again to choose Love over the ego thought system. Unity over separation

One of my favorite television shows from a while ago is Once Upon a Time. Characters from the Enchanted Forest are cursed by the Evil Queen and sent to a small town in Maine, where their memories are gone. Snow White doesn’t know who she is. Prince Charming doesn’t know who he is. Over the seasons, they find their way back to their true identity through choices: choices to love, to forgive, and to be kind. As they remember who they really are, miracles unfold.

What moves me most is how the characters who open their hearts in compassion are set free by it. Villains begin to soften, not because they are forced to, but because someone finally offers them kindness. Those who can’t let go keep struggling with their resentments. The story that unfolds is a picture of what happens in our own minds.

When we choose Love we remember who we are and our miraculous mind opens up.

Within A Course in Miracles, I find a powerful insight: The attraction of guilt has value to us only because we haven’t truly looked at what it is. We judge guilt in the dark. When we bring it into the light, we begin to ask why we ever wanted it in the first place.

Shame, unworthiness, and the belief that something is wrong with us are all permutations of one pattern of guilt. This pattern can be healed through a willingness to see it as a pattern of belief and not something true or real. Then we can let it dissolve and resolve permanently. The negativity we direct at ourselves is a result of not choosing Love when we could.

Pain is an indicator. When I feel distressed, I know I’ve got a wrong perspective. I’m valuing what has no value to my Spirit, and I’m believing that I’m a body that must protect itself.

Here are 2 questions I invite you to ask yourself:
What am I treasuring that has no value to my spirit?
What’s the point?

I return often to a prayer near the end of chapter 5 in A Course in Miracles. With this prayer we admit that we must have decided wrongly because we’re not at peace. We remember that we can decide otherwise. We ask the Higher Holy Spirit Self to undo the consequences of our wrong decisions, and we allow Spirit to decide for God for us.

This is our call to forgive ourselves. It means releasing all judgment against ourselves and against everyone else.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE:  Putting Up With Them Isn’t Love In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore the codependent relationships that keep so many of us walking on eggshells. We give more, love harder, and keep the peace, and somehow the same dynamic comes right back. I’ve seen these bargains up close in the many relationships I’ve worked with over more than 25 years as a counselor. This conversation looks at what really keeps the pattern in place and what it would mean for the relationship to finally change.
