Several years ago, as I was preparing to begin a 10 day Silent Vipassana Meditation retreat I asked someone who had done one before about her experience. She said she was bored after the second day. This surprised me. She said, “wait and see.”

Sure enough, on the third day I saw the opportunity to become bored. I saw there was a choice for me to lay aside the meditation practice and follow the path of boredom. It was crystal clear to me that the boredom path was the path of MOST resistance to the challenge of liberating via the means of this meditation practice.

It takes desire, time, energy and skill to develop and focus the mind to stay alert in any meditation. To allow myself to choose boredom would mean aligning with the ego, the surface mind and abandoning my deep commitment to liberate from attachments in the world of effects. Fortunately, my spiritual liberation is not a hobby. It’s not mere entertainment. It is my life path. I don’t incorporate my spiritual practices into my life. My whole life is my spiritual practice. Everything I’m DOING is incorporated into my path of BEING liberated through BEING masterful.

It’s so empowering to see clearly the choices to resist healing and procrastinate about becoming free from negativity. I’m so grateful I can feel the opportunities to become bored and take myself out of the game. The more awake and aware I become the more interesting, exciting, fulfilling and thrilling the smallest, gentlest connections with Spirit are. There’s far too high a price to pay to choose boredom. It’s too painful to take any more detours on this path of Liberation. Rather, I choose to challenge myself to love more fully and trade my judgments for compassion. I don’t have time to choose boredom.
