There’s a section in Chapter 18 of A Course in Miracles called The Little Willingness.
It’s the key to our awakening. It’s the key to our healing. It’s the key to our transformation.
As we’re coming to Mother’s Day on Sunday, I’m thinking about how transformed my relationship with my mother became while she was in a process called “terminal illness.” What I realized, in my relationship with my Mom, was that my little willingness was all that I needed for us to have a profound healing.
I worked that little willingness like a “mamma-jamma!” I really focused on it.
In partnership with the Higher Holy Spirit Self, I was amazed at the miraculous healing I could experience.
ACIM tells us about the Holy Instant:
“The desire and the willingness to let it come precede its coming. You prepare your mind for it… only to the extent of recognizing that you want it above all else. It is not necessary that you do more; indeed, it is necessary that you realize that you cannot do more.”
It is necessary that we realize we cannot do more. Get it?
So much of our spiritual life has been us trying to do more. Read more. Study more. Figure it out. Work harder. Be better.
ACIM is telling us something different. All we have to do is be willing.
I took that literally.
All day long, when irritation and frustration came into my mind, I would simply say, “I’m willing!”
That’s all. “I’m willing! Please take this thought out of my mind. I’m not interested in thinking it anymore. I’m not interested in investing my precious life and energy in these painful patterns. I’m willing for it to be gone.”
And it worked.
Sometimes the same thought came back a thousand times. But the next day it was 999. Then 997. Then 994. Then 982. Like that. Because of the increase in my willingness.
Once we’re absolutely and sincerely willing to let a belief go, it’s gone. The temptation to think it doesn’t return.
I learned this. I proved this.
Once we prove that to ourselves, we know there’s no part of healing that’s beyond us.
Here’s the beautiful part: we don’t have to figure out how. We just have to be willing.
If you’d like to practice “the little willingness” with us, please join my FREE Forgiveness Workshop on Saturday, May 9, the day before Mother’s Day.

New PODCAST EPISODE: You’re Not a Victim What if life isn’t happening to me at all? This week I’m sitting with one of the most foundational sections of A Course in Miracles — Chapter 27, Section 7 — and walking us into a teaching that took me a few years of real willingness to fully accept. Why does almost every problem feel like something the world is doing to us? What’s the difference between responsibility and blame that most of us have never been taught? And what was the one tiny shift that helped me realize I’d never actually been a victim at all? This is part one of a two-episode arc. Listen with me on Episode 737.
