For years I tried to feel better by changing my circumstances. Different job, different arrangement, different plan. The relief lasted about as long as it took to notice the next thing that I didn’t like.

Then I started saying something to myself.

Jennifer, stop rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Focus on the boat.

The boat being my mind, of course.

Nothing we move around out here touches the thing that’s actually frightened, worried, judgmental.

Along with that decision came a companion idea, and it’s Lesson 41. God goes with me wherever I go.

Jesus says of it:

“Today’s idea will eventually overcome completely the sense of loneliness and abandonment all the separated ones experience.”

And later in the same lesson:

“Nothing can destroy your peace of mind because God goes with you wherever you go.”

If God goes with me wherever I go, then I cannot lack. It isn’t possible because God is the ALL in ALL..

Many of us grew up with the 23rd Psalm, and that same promise sits right at the front of it. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Not for anything. The Psalm is from the Hebrew Bible, and it’s saying what Lesson 41 says. There’s no place we can go where Love isn’t already present.

Knowing these truths is what dispels the false belief in lack.

Notice how much of the day goes into energizing thoughts that aren’t true. Investing our attention in them, trying to convince ourselves of them.

Imagine spending your whole day telling yourself things that aren’t so. Wouldn’t that cause anxiety?

It would. It does.  And it’s stoppable.

The work isn’t out there on the deck of the Titanic. It’s changing the direction of our mind and our heart, and putting Spirit in charge of the boat.

We can help ourselves enormously by repeating what’s true until it settles in. I’m one with God now and forever. All is well. All is well. All is well.

That one has done so much for me over the years, and it costs nothing to begin. God is infinite Source and supply. Even when we don’t believe that intellectually, something in us comprehends it.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: You Don’t Know What Will Make You Happy In this episode, I explore ACIM teachings on happiness, certainty, and trust. I’m just home from an A Course in Miracles gathering in Stony Point, New York, and I opened Lessons 361 to 365 and the Workbook Epilogue and found the one assumption that quietly kept my own answered prayer out of reach for years. I share the surprising truth about what we’re afraid surrender will cost us, the hidden key to certainty, and why worry never runs out of material. If your faith feels shaken, come sit with me.
