One of the most common questions I get is: “How do I tell the difference between my intuition and my ego?”

The answer isn’t complicated.

The ego has a very distinct vibration. It’s stern. It’s accusatory. It’s demanding. It has an attitude. It’s not loving and compassionate and kind. It whines, berates and provokes guilt and shame.  When ego speaks, there’s a rigidity to it, a harshness, a sense of judgment.

The ego is a thought system for implementing and perpetuating the belief in separation – it has no Spirit, no real life or energy to it.

The voice of the Higher Holy Spirit Self is still and small – because it doesn’t need to shout – it’s alive.  It’s powerful.

The voice for God is simple. Non-threatening. It doesn’t argue. It’s loving and kind. It might say, “Go to bed now. This is a good time to stop what you’re doing and rest.” Or simply: “Call Mary.”

No drama. No explanation. No justification needed. Just a clear, calm direction.

The ego would add: “You should go to bed because you’re being irresponsible.” The Holy Spirit just says: “Go to bed now.”

Feel the difference?

One comes with judgment and reasoning. The other comes with Peace.

A Course in Miracles teaches us that we can tell the difference between the loving thing and the unloving thing by how it feels. Not by thinking about it. Not by analyzing it. By feeling it.

Most of us have trained ourselves not to feel. We’ve spent lifetimes closing our hearts so we could make unloving choices without feeling the weight of them. We became numb to our own guidance.

Now we’re going the other way. We’re cultivating the ability to feel clearly, strongly, beautifully.

It’s a complete U-turn. A complete recalibration.

The Holy Spirit will recalibrate us if we’re willing.

Here’s your practice: Pause throughout your day. Notice the guidance inside. Does it feel harsh and demanding? That’s ego. Does it feel still, small, kind, and peaceful? That’s guidance.

That’s all you need to know.

The rest unfolds from that single distinction.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: Trusting the One That Knows. In this episode of A Course in Miracles: Walking the Talk, Living the Love, I explore what I’ve learned about trust—not the kind where you white-knuckle your way through life hoping things turn out, but the kind where you actually let go and listen. I share a moment from Hawaii when I had to choose without understanding first, and a chipmunk encounter that revealed something I couldn’t have learned any other way. Most of us spend our lives convinced we need to figure things out first, then act. But I discovered something different. Through forgiveness practices and honest conversations about resistance, I’m uncovering why the ego’s need to know is so costly—and what becomes available when you stop insisting on proof. This episode reveals what a genuine trust in the Holy Spirit actually looks like in real life.
