Fighting for Peace? That’s Not How It Works

I was raised in the civil rights movement and came of age during Vietnam War protests. That activist spirit runs deep in my consciousness.

But here’s what helped me see it correctly: fighting for peace is like trying to find light by studying darkness.

“I’m a lover, not a fighter,” I tell people now. “I’m a worker. I will work for my awakening. I will work for the awakening of all beings. I will work for Peace on earth.”

Notice the shift? No fighting against. Just working for. Because the means to get to peace have to be peaceful, or we can’t get to peace. We just can’t.

The Nonviolent Path

Growing up surrounded by the teachings of Gandhi and King, I absorbed the power of nonviolence. It’s not passive—it’s the most expedient path. It’s the fastest route because it aligns with truth rather than perpetuating the very energy we’re trying to transform.

A Course in Miracles reminds us:
“What else but sin could be the source of guilt, demanding punishment and suffering?”

When we fight, we’re reinforcing the belief in attack and defense.
We’re keeping the whole painful cycle going.

Let’s give up all forms of fighting. From the aggressive debate, the social media attack, to the silent treatment, the cold shoulder, and all the ways we try to “win” arguments and punish the people we are mad at. That’s a powerful and deeply healing baseline spiritual practice.

Divide and Conquer vs. Unite in Love

Want to know how to dominate a group of people? Divide and conquer. Get them fighting each other. They become united in being divisive, in separation.  It happens in families, in business and in countries.

But what if WE chose differently? What if instead of uniting in hatred or fear, we united in love? We can always do this, mentally, in our heart – regardless of what others are doing.  We can intend to work together and listen to each other.

From Reaction to Response

In Masterful Living, we practice this kind of shift daily. When something triggers us, when we want to fight back, we pause. We remember our goal.

We choose to work from love rather than react from fear.

This isn’t about being passive or letting injustice stand. It’s about being so grounded in truth that our actions come from strength, not reactivity. It’s about working in the invisible realm where real change happens.  And because of this we have so much relationship healing.

ACIM teaches: Love is the only thing that actually heals anything anyway. It’s the only way to heal something back to the root cause. Not fighting. Not analyzing. Love.

So today, if you feel that urge to fight against something, ask yourself: What can I work FOR instead? How can I be part of the solution through love rather than perpetuating the problem through resistance?

This is the path of the spiritual practitioner.  We change our mind, and the world changes.

SATURDAY FORGIVENESS WORKSHOP – If you’d like to address the root cause of ALL your challenges rather than managing symptoms forever, join with like-minded souls for my FREE Forgiveness Workshop this Saturday, October 18. Come experience what happens when we stop trying to solve a thousand different problems and start healing the one thing that creates them all. Your willingness to choose Love over separation is all that’s needed.

LATEST ACIM PODCAST EPISODE: In this episode, I dive into ACIM teachings on oneness from Chapter 9, Section 6 on The Acceptance of Your Brother —and how this realization transforms the way we approach our relationships, especially helpful to us during the upcoming holiday season. I share my personal journey from difficult family gatherings to peaceful celebrations by learning this profound truth: your brothers and sisters are part of you, and rejecting them means rejecting yourself. I open up about my 25 years as a spiritual counselor and how seeing perfection in my clients taught me to see it in myself, and I guide you through the practice of extending love even when it’s hard—especially with the relatives who trigger you most. I also share my perspective that humanity is experiencing a collective “extinction burst” where all our separation thinking is surfacing intensely before we break through to collective awakening, and I invite you to join me in choosing to see the Christ in everyone as we prepare for the holidays ahead.
