When my mother got her cancer diagnosis, I made a decision. I said, “Okay. My mother is not getting off this planet until we have a total healing in our relationship.”

That became my priority.

I was so grateful for A Course in Miracles. I had been a Science of Mind Practitioner and Minister for years. I had done a lot of mental transformation. But this was an opportunity to take it to a whole other level.

Here’s what I learned: we can have an ego motivation, which is often pain, discomfort, upset, fear, worry. Or we can have a Divine inspiration, which comes from Love, Joy, Peace, and Harmony.

Until we start to live from inspiration, the pain is always going to be pushing us to choose healing.

I made a commitment to be incredibly mindful of any judgments I had about my mother. When they would come into my mind, I would silently say to the Higher Holy Spirit Self:

Higher Self, Holy Self, please take this thought out of my mind so I never think it again. I’m offering it to You. Please take this thought and all thoughts like it out of my mind.

I had to do this practice a hundred times a day. A hundred times a day.

It was not always easy. It was, in fact, sometimes extremely difficult. When I was visiting my parents during my mother’s years of illness, there were many times I went into my room, shut the door, and got down on my knees, praying:

“Holy Spirit, I feel like these judgments are ripping me apart. I’m not interested in energizing them anymore. Please take them out of my mind. They only cause pain and suffering.”

And here’s what happened.

At the end of one particular two-week visit, during which my mother was going through daily radiation, we had some real healing. It was a three hour round trip drive to the hospital and back. It was wintertime. We were driving in the snow. It was gloomy and the drive was challenging, twisty, turny, hilly, icy snowy roads. There was nothing fun about any of it.

At the end of the two weeks, my mother said something I’ll never forget:

“This is the nicest visit we’ve ever had.”

I just about fell over. I thought, “How could that be? You’re in such discomfort!”

But you know why it was?

Because for two weeks, I wasn’t really judging her. I was transforming those judgments. I was being more kind, more loving, more compassionate, more fun, more harmonious, more peaceful with her than I had ever been.

I focused on letting her know I loved her, accepted her as she was and that I really cared.

That was her experience. And it was made possible because I was healing my mind.

Months before she made her transition, we had a total healing. We were at peace together. We knew it. We felt it. We recognized it. We enjoyed it.

It was one of the most joyful times of my life.

Here’s what I would like you to know:

We can have a healing with our mother. Whether she’s on the planet or gone, it doesn’t matter. Because we’re joined in our mind, forever.

The same is true for any relationship. Father. Sister. Brother. Friend. Partner. Anyone.

The healing is always possible. It begins with our willingness. It continues with our consistency. It deepens with our practice.

Peace is our choice.

In form, my mother’s body died. But my mother and I were resurrected to a loving relationship. We had a healing.

Latest PODCAST EPISODE:  You’re Not a Victim  What if life isn’t happening to me at all? This week I’m sitting with one of the most foundational sections of A Course in Miracles — Chapter 27, Section 7 — and walking us into a teaching that took me a few years of real willingness to fully accept. Why does almost every problem feel like something the world is doing to us? What’s the difference between responsibility and blame that most of us have never been taught? And what was the one tiny shift that helped me realize I’d never actually been a victim at all? This is part one of a two-episode arc. Listen with me on Episode 737.
